  • Oil smelt burnt after 2770kms and no coolant in reservoir tank

My car is only 5mths old with 2770kms on the clock. There is no coolant in reservoir tank and the oil smelt burnt. Toyota dealer is stating its due for its 6mth or 10,000km service as its 6mths old (build date 28/6/16)
They said the oil has deteriorated and that's why it smells.
Doesn't seem right - want other opinions please.

    NO, it doesn't seem right.
How long has the coolant reservoir been empty?

            Hello RSmith,

You will notice that most folk put details of their car in their signature area, so everyone knows what car they are talking about, so in the absence of a signature with specific car details, it might pay to describe your car....having said that...no doubt, something is absolutely not right, and yes indeed, you MUST get the car serviced according to whichever occurs first... 6 month intervals or at least 10,000 km...although the 6 months interval is not taken from the "build date" but typically from the date you purchased or picked up the car....they typically write the date in the service record book...... but something is potentially seriously wrong...like a coolant leak and an engine overheat...

            1. Did the engine warning light come on
            2. Did the temperature gauge either go up, or go up and then down...
            3. Have you just done a big trip, or have you noticed any fluid on the driveway/garage
            4. If the reservoir tank empty is the actual radiator empty (but don't remove the radiator cap if then engine is hot)

I have never had any loss of coolant or burnt oil smell...but whatever you do don't drive the car...or even start it...this could be a very serious or even terminal engine problem...if it has lost coolant, over heated and burnt oil, could be as simple as as a broken fan belt or a small hole in a radiator hose...through to a blown engine...keep us up to date with developments, and I hope they can sort it out quickly for you....but this wont have been caused by a late service, as its only 6 months old right now (from build date)...and I would recon the actual service is not due for another month at least...so they cant blame you for not getting it serviced.....

Your warranty and service dates start from the day you drive it away so you are OK there but when I bought mine new back 2015 and I was expected to take it back after 1000k or one month for a free quick checkover.

Is that page in your service manual and if so did you do that ? If so then you should be OK but you are also required to check that your vehicle is not using fluids unexpectedly.

If the car is faulty then we expect them to fix it under warranty, but if it has leaked oil or coolant we do have a responsibility to tell them, we can't simply keep driving until our next service is due.

Maybe you can talk to NT govt fair trading department

Is this about the same time that you first started noticing the 'burnt oil' smell?

I have to say that it all points to an extreme overheating issue. As asked by others, do you recall seeing the Temp Gauge rising unusually above half way?

Have you tried filling the reservoir with distilled water and seeing what happens when you start and run it for 15 mins a few times around the block? If the water you put it has disappeared, I would have your dealer come pick it up?

All being said, I would be getting it back to your dealer quick smart!
