  • Humming noise from front on 120D

    Hi Everyone,

Thought I might post this weird sound that I having coming form the front just in case someone might know. I have a 2008 120 Diesel and recently while driving I began to hear this humming noise coming from the front. Now I suspect it's the tyres but not sure why it will be humming.

It is constantly humming and as you go faster, the sound becomes louder, so it's almost like the tyres while rotating faster make the noise. Soon as I turn the steering wheel slightly to the left it goes away. Put the steering wheel straight again and the noise comes back. If I turn right, the noise remains. It's only when you steer slightly to the left and onwards that the noise goes away. I have checked underneath the front wheels and it's all clear. Nothing is touching or rubbing the tyres at all.

The tyres are about 20,000 kms old and they are the BFG KO2

    Any ideas?

    Thank you!

Try rotating the tyres. Making sure they run backward rotation to what they were, and see if it changes it.

      Front wheel bearings.

      With old hub

      With new hub & nuts.
I add sealant, as I don't trust it. This area gets smashed with mud & water.

I had a similar problem a few years ago and it turned out to be a cv joint on its way out. Have a look underneath and check the condition of the cv boots, make sure that they are not split and that there is no grease on the outside of the rubber boot. If you find a split boot it obviously needs to be changed out and the cv joint repacked with grease asap to stop complete failure of the cv joint. An easy way to check if the joint is taking is to find an empty car park and put the Prado on full lock left and drive in a circle a few times, repeat for full lock right. Do the same in reverse. If you hear a clicking or clunking sound travelling in one direction you almost certainly have a dodgy cv joint. To check the wheel bearings jack the car up and get hold of the wheel at 12 o'clock and six o'clock and see whether you can move the wheel by hand pulling and pushing away from you. If there is any movement in the wheel in that direction the wheel bearing has failed.

Thanks for the replies so far everyone.

It's not the cv joint. Checked that on both sides. No leaks or noises on full lock etc.

I am starting to think it is the bearings. Well do a check this week on any play at the front wheels.

Lifted the car today to check if there was any play with the wheels. There was no play. They sound fine as i span the wheels too.

Might have to go get it checked out somewhere.

They often have no play, but dry & noisy only at speed.

How many Klm's has the vehicle travelled?

Took it to a shop to get all wheels rotateted. They also did a visual i spection of bearings.

The noise is still the same. If the bearings are good like they say - even though its hard to tell, i think it could be the tyres. Not sure.

Ditto on the bearings. Same symptoms as yours and new bearings fixed the problem. I posted into an old thread in July this year about. Don't know how to provide a link here. Do a search for "Sozjot" and the thread was titled grinding/whirring noise or similar in the 120 series general posts.
                            Cheers,

My right hand front wheel bearing packed up at 208.00Km. On a Sunday preceeding a long weekend in outback South Australia. Seems like 200.00km might be the time to replace bearings.
