  • Your best Accessory?

    Hi Friends,

I'm about to get my 2003 gxl v6 petrol Prado - this week sometime - very excited.

I'm looking forward to more camping! - Bribie Island beach side is one of my favorites.

    I live in Brisbane, 2 kids, 6 and 11.

The car has factory fitted roof racks (3), so I'm probably going to get a flat rack vs a basket with sides all around - a flat rack seems more versatile? Would you agree? (I have no idea what brand/model yet - suggestions?)

So to the title of this post - for a family doing light camping - beaches, Mt Warning, other - please tell me about accessories that made your (camping/prado) life so much better.

Also, any recommendations of camping spots within 3 hours of Brisbane would be great.

    Best wishes,

    Adam.

    Hey Adam,

    Nice purchase!

My best accessory is my ARB alloy full length roofrack with full length side runners (not the flat version). Bit of up and down work climbing up onto the roof, but great for camping. I have loaded this rack right up, x4 jerry cans on twin arb carriers, spare tyre, big gas bottle, maxtrax, fishing rods, tents, camping chairs, awning, kaymar shovel holder and hi-lift jack, oztrail gazebo etc. etc.

Been through Simpson West/East/West up steep dune faces with this kind of setup, and across Australia. It's top heavy, but just drive to conditions and it is remarkably stable.

You'll appreciate having this kind of rack with your family taking up the back seat.

My advice would be to also get a cargo barrier so you can build in the back, fridge, draws etc.

...then think about suspension, perhaps the most important accessory!

Hey Mark - so the benefits of having sides on the roof rack - easier to tie stuff down?

      Cheers, Adam.

A alloy rack is great. Just don't waste the extra money on a arb one. Same with drawers there are some great ones around for your model and put a fridge slide on it

Best thing we did was decent AT tyres in 70 profile. I choose MT STZ's but lots to choose from. So much better than the crap Grandtreks.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

Hi Guys I'll just butt in here with my two bobs worth.

I have a Rhino Pioneer platform and originally I also purchased the removable side rails, they lasted one trip and now collect dust in the garage. I actually found it a hindrance when tying stuff down. Especially now that I use the cam style straps instead of ratchet straps with hooks. When tying stuff down I just go around the rack and gear and pull tight job done. I did think the rails might help if I was loading on a slope, but without them does not seem to be an issue.

As for my number one accessory, rhino rack and foxwing awning, would be lost without them.

But geez I like my fridge (cold beer), works best with an aux battery, maybe a solar panel to charge it. Mate the list is endless.

But I still think an awning of some sort is a must if you like spending time at the beach. Did a week to Fraser in November a few years back in a new car no awning and shade was what we missed the most.

            Cheers Roger

              Hey all,

The ARB full alloy rack and the Pioneer rack are two quite different pieces of gear in functional and load bearing terms.

Even though the Pioneer rack now comes with a full length backbone, it is not in the same strength category as the ARB rack. Thin and very light aluminum bolted beams on the Pioneer compared to thicker walled aluminum welded circular tubing on the ARB rack. There is no way I would attempt to carry the gear I have described above on a Pioneer rack.

Having rails on the side of either is definitely a personal preference, and will definitely relate to the style of touring you do.

Any kind of roof rack is a good start on your 4wd and will allow you to start camping, and the awning to go on it is definitely a big plus, and relatively cheap for a standard one!

Which roofracks are already fitted? The ones where the ends curve down to meet the roof? Or do the crossbars extend past the legs?

The roof rack ends curve down to meet the roof - what does this mean for you?

                    Cheers, Adam

The rhino pioneer Platform uses the legs and feet of the roof racks where the bars extend past the legs.

As yours curve down, only the feet can be reused. This is assuming that what you have is the genuine Toyota or rhinorack equivalent.

If the roofracks extend past the legs, it would have been an easy decision to just get the Pioneer Platform. However you can still get the platform, just need to source the legs from your rhinorack dealer or used off Gumtree or eBay.

man what a list to troll through.

Straight up Camping "Accessory" has to be a Tie between
Fridge + dual battery and the Hot Water Heat exchanger + shower tent
But its hard to go past the hard floor camper, hard to call that an "Accessory" tho
