  • Install New UHF - run off which fuse number?

    Hi Guys,

Installing a GME TX3100 radio in my 150 2010 GXL 3L Diesel Prado.

Going to run it off the 12v power fuse, is that fuse number 1 under the dash or am i better running it off the cigarette lighter. If the lighter is better what number is it? Can't see it listed in the book but assume its 12v power??

I'm connecting it via a Blade Fuse Wire Tap adaptor 12-24v 30A + 20A Max

    Thanks

It is better to run the UHF straight off the battery, with both positive and earth back to the battery, with a fuse on the positive. The fuse is also probably better to be 2A or 5A max as the UHF shouldn't draw a lot of power.

Will that mean that there is power constantly running to the device?

        Yep.

Mines tapped into the supply to the 12v socket in the centre console.

Yep so if you accidentally leave the UHF on it'll flatten your battery.
I tapped into the ciggie lighter as well.

Why does he need to run both back to the battery? A cb wont use much power put it on the ciggie liger circuit, whats your logic on doing that? why cant he use an earth from under the dash its not an amp using a heap of current why even goto the battery. Why does the cb need to be live all the time?

Its fairly good practice to run electrical things back to the battery. Belts and Braces type thing.
I'm not sure its strictly necessary in this instance. If you do connect directly back to the battery, you could set it up with a relay to switch with the ignition...

I have run mine from Battery so it has power all the time.
It's good if your waiting for someone you can turn the car off and leave the UHF on
If you run off accessories it turns off after 20 min or so.
Must get around to running it off the AUX battery instead of the starter battery.

I have recently fitted a GME 3550s after reading many of the threads on PP. I have run it off the auxiliary battery. PP advice suggests that as well as constant power, the other important reason is that there is much less chance of the electrics causing interference to the radio this way.

I was told to run straight off the battery in case you lost your keys while out in the bush you could smash a window and call for help.
Doesn't drain much off the 2nd battery anyway.

My setup provides me with 2 x 20 amp power feeds directly into the cab (via firewall grommet)
1 x Dual Battery source (Always On)
1 x Started Battery source (ACCessory ON)
(both fused before entering the cab)
With smaller fused for all the funnies inside the cab.
                      - Dual USB Charger/Power Supply
                      - 12v Accessory Socket(s)
                      - Dual Volt-Meter
                      - CrashCam
                      - UHF

You should provide your UHF with the "best" power feed you can - when transmitting it uses between 2-5amp (radio dependant)
                      - normal Accessory Sockets may give you that much, (some sockets in the Prados do 120W - eg approx 9amp @13.4v) but if you plug something else into that socket - eg. GPS, HandHeld UHF Battery Charger, Neck Massager etc. you are cutting it close.
                      - this may affect your transmit quality/range/etc.

Disclosure: the above is mostly some good guess work, but have not jumped under the hood with sensitive measuring equipment to verify the above.

That was my plan, there's plenty of places to earth it under there. I think it only draws 5 watts so running git back there was an overkill i thought.

                          Hi Guys,

Used the fuse tap off the 12v fuse to power the UHF and I can report no issues at all. The UHF works as it should, and my other devices running off the 12v are not affected by it at all.

I guess the only down side is that it does turn off once the ignition is turned off, good that it will not drain the battery if left on, but I guess as "33som" said, if you need to break into your car to call for help this is not possible.

                          Cheers

I personally run mine off ignition, simply because I'm a forgetful bastard and would leave it on and flatten my battery. The constant power source though is a great idea, I might run a switch on mine to activate a constant power in case of emergency. Then again, easy enough to wire it up in the bush if required, so long as I'm not mortally damaged... LOL

                              Hi All
Sorry for dredging up an older thread. I'm picking up my 2013 150 GXL during the week having traded the old faithfull 120 GXL. Anyway I intend to install the UHF and Smoothtalker Iphone6 cradle from the 120 into the 150 next weekend. Both need 12 volts and both were installed professionally in the 120.
From spending way too much time searching today I'm picking up three common ways of getting 12v.
                              1. - straight off the battery
                              2. - off the centre wire of cigrette lighter / aux power
                              3. - wire tapping into an empty fuse scket using something like this - https://www.jaycar.com.au/wire-tap-m...e-15a/p/SF5122
I guess it's like a Prado or Pajero thing or am I missing something? Is there a clearly better way of doing it?
