  • 2 stroke oil in a D4d

    http://www.baileysdiesel.com/on-high...-rail-engines/

    Hi all.

I found this article tonight and was wondering 2 things:
    1. Does the prado 120 have a Denso common rail?
    2. Has anyone else tried this and if so what results did you get?

    Regards,
    Andrew

    Prado do run Denso injectors.
Running the oil will not hurt anything, plus the added lubrication will be beneficial as well.
If Baileys recommend it, i would believe Matt over others.

I read this article with interest and was going to ask the same thing. Are they suggesting all D4D owners run 2 stroke oil mixed in every tank of fuel?

And why is it only good for 2005-2012 vehicles? Despite this engine being around since early 2000's? Are they different injectors? Denso? Not/different DLC coatings?

Interested if it would hurt or affect a post 2012 engine. Any experts care to elaborate?

      Cheers

Not an expert but have been running two stroke in various diesel cars for about 6 years now. In some it was very noticeable, 05 Patrol and 60 series Landcruiser in particular. The 2013 150 I have now less so but I will continue to use it. I use a ratio of about 250:1 give or take.

Just ensure you use a mineral oil, not a synthetic or outboard. I use Gulf Western, 4 litres is about $25.00.

What about some lanolin injection to soften the steering wheel.

Or maybe they're putting it out there for those that "upgrade" to BDG DLC injectors and then the cold rattle promptly commences???

Customer I've been running your BDG injectors for x months now but noticed a cold start rattle. could there be a problem in BDG mfg process?
BDG Nah, just run some 2 stoke oil through it to quieten it down.
Customer Why would I do that, I have your DLC injectors and you said the cold rattle is gone for good.
BDG Its on our website, have a read...

The common rail only started in 2006 (ish) in the Prado's thus the years as described.

Yep, and try some Botox if the leather has stretched.
I have used 2 stroke for years, replaces the sulphur they took out, and I have yet to hear of any damage done by the practice. It makes JetA1 ( a dry fuel closer to kero) usable in a diesel engine. It is the same principle as using an upper cyl lube when running LPG (another dry fuel) so I can see method in the alleged madness. As far as I see, it can't hurt, and it costs a lot less than miracle diesel treatments.

Can I use second hand fish and chip oil from my local - cheaper and they have tonnes of it.

If you filter it enough. Rudolph Diesel envisioned that his engine would run on vegetable oil, powering the agricultural machinery in remote areas that would produce the fuel to run them. Might not get quite the perfomance you are after though.

Would not hesitate to use filtered fish and chip oil if we had the old mechanical injection but it needs the full processing to biodiesel to run it in a common rail. ( appropriate use of methanol and an alkaline). Pity that Baileys just offer opinion that it "ran quieter" rather than even the most basic of science experiments like running say 10 mining company prados with 2stroke and 10 without and see the difference. Other than "it makes sense" there is no evidence base to recommend this.

                          This part of their explanation:
"With Denso Common Rail operating systems, nearly all failures we have seen at Bailey’s Diesel are seizure related or seizure based failures" written by them in BOLD type seems to be why they are recommending the additive, and given that 2T is the only lubricant in a 2 stroke engine, one can assume that lubrication is what it is for. Try running a 2 stroke without it and you will get a similar effect to what they describe here. There is actually other info out there citing how it was the only thing that got a fleet of Merc trucks through Central Asia without pumps seizing, apparently due to the quality of the fuel available. So whilst it is not a must do here, it obviously has some effect on the lubricity of the fuel, which can't be a terrible thing, can it?

As said there is logic but unfortunately nothing more. This anecdote is not evidence. A 2 stroke petrol engine is not an electronic high-pressure common rail diesel injector. The 2 stroke motorbike will seize within say 5km or less without oil while a non "Denso" injector will last (in most cases) the life of the engine and a denso will last a good 150,000km, all without 2 stroke. Likewise there is no evidence that 2 stroke oil will do any harm either.

Did this with my 2004 d4d 120 with 540k on the clock and with a rattling engine (1 and 2 feedback is around + and - 2) (in the eu we have d4d since the end of the 90 series) because of the BDG article. 30L diesel and 1dl 2T oil in a near empty tank. If anything it's rattling and smoking even more - but hey, it was worth a try
