  • Pointer to UHF install instructions.

I bought a non-remote head Uniden UHF (I did not read about the advantages of the remote head before purchasing). No matter. I think I will mount under the ashtray and to the left, or by the passengers right knee. I have a brake controller in the ashtray.

I think I am going to hard wire to the main battery, and turn off when not in use. I am going to screw my antenna to my bull bar as it has a mounting spot. Should I anticipate problems with a bullbar antenna mount on the Prado (the bar seems to vibrate alot!)? I will poke the antenna wire and power through the (legendary) passenger side firewall grommet. I pulled some fat wires through this to charge my trailer batteries.

How do people get the antenna wire and power from there to behind the centre dash. I have seen one install where the antenna came up through the leftmost of the switch blanks beside the lower ciggy lighter port. That sort of appeals, but I want to know if I can get behind this panel more easily - or do I have to pull the whole centre dash off. I have googled around (too much) and not seen any solution apart from full removal (which I am a bit chicken to do). Can anyone point to a thread which has some pointers/instructions on an easier access route, or the best set of dash removal notes if I have to man-up and do that.

    Much appreciated!

Ensure the antenna has a substantial base spring. Those tiny little spiral spring mounted ones will wobble and eventually break. From the left main wire grommet, follow behind or under the glovebox panel. Remove the left side end piece from the console (this is the end near passenger right foot). You should be able to push the cable up from there. Failing that, you can remove the forward upper black plastic trim panel, the one ahead of the shifter with the aux power outlet on. It is a bastard to get out.

Get a panel remover behind the forward leading edge and lever it up and back towards you, there are clips under the front edge.

See from post #8 and follow removal of centre console trim panel to access behind ciggy lighter. You could power your UHF from here so it only operates when accessory power is on like mine.

THanks for the quick response. Nice clear pics of how to move side trims. I am fairly sure my antenna is of the "tiny little spiral spring" variety. How long have I got? Going to do the Strzelecki, Oodnadatta and Simpson desert in July. How long will it last?

I mount the antenna on the awning. Way way less vibrations and better performance up there.

Possible to remove just this panel?

So I should be able to remove this panel without removing the whole dash? That would be great. Thanks

I have my UHF wired permanently and you would be amazed how often it gets left on for days. If there is no talk on it when you finish driving, I just seem to forget it. Fortunately it doesn't seem to draw a lot of power.

Yeah. I don't drive for weeks at a time, so it could be a problem. But that is when I am at home in Brisbane, so is not critical. When I am in the bush I am likely driving every day, so not worried about leaving it on overnight. I think I prefer this to having to leave the car on acc if I want to listen for transmissions in the desert in the evening.
