  • Prado Kakadu Reversing Camera

I upgraded to a new face lifted 150 Kakadu and I am very unhappy with the quality of the reversing camera at night. It is very pixelated and blurry and basically useless. I had a Pre facelift 150 Kakadu before this and the reversing camera was awesome on it. Toyota has advised that they are aware they are crap at night but you get what you get..........
Toyota said because they have changed the stereo unit from the early 150 Kakadu that is the reason why it is not the same. They advised that changing the camera under warranty will do nothing and that's how they are. I also looked into changing my camera over to the same as the early 150 Kakadu but the camera and wiring are totally different.
Can anyone offer any constructive suggestions on this issue?

Can you take a video to illustrate?
Normally the source of image issues is with the device taking the image. So I would suspect that the camera is the issue first.

If the pixelation issue isn't there during daytime, then it would suggest that there is not enough light hitting the sensor and the sensor is overcompensating by adjusting its sensitivity. The stereo's display should take whatever the camera sends down and displays it without any further manipulation (unless there is more processing with the new model).

Yeah you're right Sundowner. I have a 2016 Kakadu and compared to my 2012 Lexus IS 350F, which is basically the same camera, the Prado Kakadu camera is prehistoric by comparison. Mind you so is everything else by comparison. Take the auto folding mirrors straight from the Lexus which do not fold in automatically, unless you press a button. I mean how hard would it have been to have them fold in automatically when the car is switched off, which is the whole point. And who has a late model car these days where the doors do not lock automatically. Toyota Prado of course! Lift your game Toyota or Kia and Hyundai will roll over the top of you!

That is the camera struggling with low light. It is in colour so it suggests that it doesn't have an infrared mode for night time which is much better. Was your image black and white in the previous Kakadu?

Colour camera that has no low lift mode.. Probably only good down to say 1 lux.. Whereas a lot of other cameras can do .1 lux. Etc.
not much you can do unless it has a menu to enable low light/ BW mode.

Thanks Piggy, I will have another look in the menu settings tonight, but I don't believe it has a low light setting. Looks like I am stuck with this crap camera

I cant remember now amts, but the previous Kakadu may have been B&W at night which may explained why it was so clear. I just cant remember actually.

You could fit a rear work light is linked to the reverse lights/additional LED reversing light to lift the light levels at night?

It's not in my 2009 model. It doesn't work all that well at night unless there is an external light source but it's not as bad as in the pics posted earlier.

The image in my '13 GXL is pretty good at night. I think the image lacks colour. I dont use it all that often - day or night. Thats why mirrors were invented...

With the privacy glass I find it hard to see out a night, even via the wing mirrors. I usually end up winding them down when I have to reverse at night.
