  • GPS mounts

Have purchased a Garmin GPS and am wondering how others have mounted their GPS units. The small section of flat plastic above the central front vents is not that deep, so normal suction mounts don't look like they fit. I don't want a 7" GPS hanging off the windscreen in my field of view and would like to have to have it in reach also. Thinking about an extension flex mount which can extend to 40cm and mount this on the glass and have the unit hang on front of the vents/reverse can screen.

What has everyone else done.. Can u send through pics and deets?

First post, just joined..be gentle :P

Maybe have a look here :-

Not sure which series Prado you have, the page I have linked above is for the 120. If you go to the Device Holder section and choose GPS they have specific Garmin mounts but I don't know which model Garmin you have so can't provide a specific link. You need to purchase both the dashboard mount and the device holder, it's a 2 part system.

    Welcome to the forum BTW!

+1 for hold my phone. I use them all the time for phones, tablets and GPS devices for all my customers. It might seem a little pricy but it's definetly worth the money.

RamMount for me, holds the 10 inch iPad air, solid as a rock.

Again - +1 holdmy phone - I use my iphone along with Memory map as a GPS. I have used the center mount on the dash for almost a year and a half. Keeps the phone below dash level and in a nice position easy to reach and see. Does cover the AC vent a bit, but hasn't caused any issues with climate control or the phone so far. Doesn't seem to affect GPS either being lower down.

As Fido says the mount and device holder are separate so you can swap if you need to.

My cheap bottom of the range TOMTOM just sits in the usual spot in the bottom corner of the windscreen when I use it.

Heard good things about the RAM mount as well.

Thanks Fido. I've got ,150 and Garmin 2979. Looking at the position I'd like to mount, they have the vent mount, which I'm not keen on. But awesome site. Will keep it in mind depending upon what other options I have.

This is the mount I have been looking at. Glass mounted but extend forward to place the GPS closer to me and resting on the dash edge above the Centre vents. Anyone used one like this or have an option ? I thought if I rest the unit on the dash edge, it want drop while offroad, and adhesive foam strip under it will protect the vehicle.

I've used a similar mount made by Belkin. Didn't work too well for me and often came loose.
The GPS/Phone was also not steady, way too much movement in the mount due to the length of the arm.

I use a "hold my phone" holder for a Galaxy tab 3 8.0 grafted to a genuine samsung note 1 glass mount. the bottom edge sits on top of the dash just above the temp display on my 120. It hasn't moved or wobbled at all since I mounted it about 12 months ago. I'll post a photo later today.
The hold my phone was about $60 + postage and the samsung mount was old stock at Dick Smiths on special for I think $10.

I suspected that might be the case... I am going to see how big the garmin mount is that comes with the device. There is a section of flat plastic on the side of the central vents which is about 2.5 inchs wide.. this may just fit the mount... fingers crossed

Just be aware that the heat can wreck the battery in the device. I lost the battery in my Aldi tablet. Replaced the unit with a different brand and try not to let it get in direct sun.

It took me a while to figure out what the pulsed hissing sound was.
