  • Which bike rack?

    Hi all,

I've had my GX Prado for a little over a Month now and have been fitting it up with a few accessories to make it "Mine".

My direction with the car is not so much "serious off-road" but more useable for me, and able to carry my bikes for some "serious, off-road cycling"

Does anyone on here have any experience with some of the better bike carrying devices out there?

Grip is the man! Mountain biker himself. Photos of mine on the other thread reference above. If I get a chance I will do a photo of it behind the 150.

After having a standard bike rack and several different shaped bikes my main
priority for a new rack would be that it is one of the ones where the bike is
supported by its wheels and not the frame as it is a pain in the bum to have to
fit the adapters to fit the bike to the carrier.

        Cheers

Have a serious look at Kuat Bicycle racks. A mate has the Sherpa model and it's very good. It fits to the tow hitch and can carry 2 bikes without taking front wheels off which is handy with QR front wheels on the way out. It can fold up when he is not using it and access to the rear tailgate of his car is not an issue. It fits our 29ers with ease and no worries about them coming loose etc.

This is a thread that caught my attention straight away. After bullbar, rear bar, etc. I as looking how to carry my bikes. Has anyone used the on roof bike carriers? I ride either a giant xtc or giant reign and the missus rides a giant tempt, used to just throw them in the back of the old cruiser, but want something a bit better than that for the prado. I am 6"2' and young, so getting on the roof shouldn't be too bad I hope, but let me know if its way to difficult.

You can get a Kuat that takes up to 4. It's the NV Add-On and attaches to tow hitch.

I have a Thule Outride for my Carbon roadie (Giant Defy) that sits on bars on factory rails. Easy enough to use and get on and off. I'm 185 cm (just under 6'1") and it doesn't pose an issue but you have to remove the front wheel and mount through the forks. The bike clips in easy enough and is stable and holds it until you tighten it up. If you're going over rough roads you might want one that holds the frame as well. I don't really trust the fork mount with lateral movement.

The carrier itself is easy to fit to the bars. T bolts into the channel and a cam-lock to tighten it. I leave the bolts in the carrier and just loosen them off to remove the carrier. Saves a few minutes and I don't have to climb up trying to line the holes and bolts up when I re-attach.

I use a tow bar mounted Thule 'Hang on 3' for me and the wifey's Alloy MTB's. My 29er sits well but the low bar of the wife's is a pain. I don't have a adaptor bar for it yet.

Some good suggestions there. Thanks everyone!

I have also found this one - http://www.isi-carriers.com/isi-4x4-...-4x4-ed-m.html

Looks pretty heavy duty. So far its the one that seems to do everything, and not impede the access to the rear of the Prado. The bikes also seem to sit up high, so in the event of a rear ender, the bikes may be up out of the way enough, not to be damaged.

I am still checking out all the options, but this one looks like the one i'll end up going for.

                      Looks good.

My Thule tow bar mount drops down so you can open the rear door easy enough, but it is a bit low. When I had it on the xtrail I managed to bend the front wheel when I reversed down a steep drive as it caught on the road

Thanks r4ndll, I was either looking at the Thule provide 591 or the rhino rack discovery bike rack. I don't really like the idea of having to pull the front wheel out and throw it in the back, just increases the chances of bending a disk or the wedge falling out the caliper and the lever getting pulled. The old pull the lever without the disk in can be quite expensive, ask my niece how I know

We're looking for a Bike Rack for our Prado that will fit 5 Bikes.... Found this: Allens Sport 552RR Deluxe 5-Bike 2” Hitch Mounted Carrier. It's on Page 15. We're looking something that we can use so we can go down to the local bike tracks as a family for a ride.....

Has anyone had experience with these:

Honestly, I love it. As a base level roadie, it's great! It's a Giant Defy Composite with full Shimano 105, full carbon frame. I got it on run out with $500 off as it was the last of the previous year's stock. I find the geometry nice and comfortable for my size (185cm, 85kg), and have done several triathlons, and 3 Sydney to Gongs on it. Getting on it after the alloy 29er takes a bit of getting used to as it's so responsive, and a bit flighty, but it's half the weight. I did bust a spoke on the original giant rims after 6 months, and have got base level Shimano rims on it.

I do feel like I'm riding the falcon/commodore of bikes compared to some of the ones you see on the road. Yes I'd love a Cervello or similar , but it was bought to a price, and it does the job well. I can't justify the price some roadie frames. And because I do triathlons, the Defy geometry lends it self to a triathlon set up.

I got it after riding a borrowed Defy alloy frame for 6 months with Carbon seat post and forks, which was also a nice bike to ride.
