  • Travelling to the GTG from Sydney

I don't know how many people are travelling from Sydney- only 3 people voted from NSW in the where are you coming from poll.

It would be good to travel down in convoy if anyone is planning to leave on the Monday and stay somewhere overnight on the way.

As I mentioned in another thread, I would like to take my son through The Snowy Mountains.

    Anyone interested?
    Cheers, Brad

There is only three confirmed attendees from NSW, being yourself, glen_ep and Pearl150. Good idea for a road trip together if you can.

Unfortunately I'm heading down there late - sat 12th - so can't. Would have loved to though.

Does bring to mind options for the return trip though. I plan to hang around in the mountains until the 21st - but explore some different areas.

We need some Sydneysiders to fill the last couple of spots!

Hi, I'm at Goulburn so will most likely do a day trip to Mansfield on the Tuesday? You would get a good run through Goulburn, Queanbeyan, Cooma, Jindabyne, Thredbo, Corryong, and down to Mansfield. Would take a couple of days from Sydney to go via the snowy however a good camp at Tom Groggin on the way. Cheers, Pearl

If you guys want to team up with us SA folk for safety reasons then that's cool. I spoke with DFAT and they said our planned trip to Mexico for the GTG is definitely dangerous. Safety in numbers they say...

The Tasmania crew is going to try and sneak in under the radar and head from Glenrowan down to Tolmine via the Ned Kelly Tree and come into Mansfield the back way hopefully undetected.

I need an express way down there so I don't arrive too late on the Saturday!

                  I'm tossing up between:
                  1) inland (Sydney, Yass, Albury, Harrietville, part Blue Rag Range, South Basault Knob)
                  2) inland (Sydney, Yass, Albury, Harrietville, Dargo High Plains Rd, McMillians Rd)
                  3) coastal (Sydney, Cooma, Bombala, Cann River, near Bairnsdale, Dargo, Dargo High Plains Rd, McMillians Rd)

I'm thinking #2 might be the fastest, anyone in the know?

Braddo - I came back a similar way in Jan the other way.

Not sure where you are in Sydney, but we did Harrietville, Hotham, Omeo, Suggan Buggan, and along the Snowy River via Barry Way to Jindabyne, Cooma to Braidwood via the back of the Duea National Park then to Bateman's Bay. It took us 10 hours so 2 days would do you.
Check the trip report here: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post454753

You could do the reverse if you are coming in from the South or even join from Queanbeyan / Braidwood. Some very good dirt roads and highway. Or you could take off from Jindabyne up through Thredbo

I'm thinking #2 would be the quickest but #1 would be more fun. When we did route #1 we left Harrietville about 9:30am and hit Talbotville at just before 12 on that same route. But that's traveling in Convoy of 8 trucks and and going fairly slow with morning tea stops and picture stops, waiting for stragglers etc.

Grant Junction> Harrietville took us 1hr 22mins going back

I'll be leaving Goulburn early Tuesday morning if anyone wants to tag along. Only taking it casual as towing a camper this time. Cheers

Cheers guys. I won't need the fun (south basalt) way in as I've been there before. I'm thinking #3 as it'll provide me with scenery I haven't seen before, and be about the same length as #2. mmmmaybe

As I mentioned earlier, i would like to take my son through The Snowy mountains and hopefully see a little snow. Does anyone know where the most likely place is or even if any snow would be there???

Best spot in NSW would probably be Charlottes Pass as its the highest drivable location in NSW. Over in VIC we'll be near Mt Hotham which is also a good spot.

Unfortunately its just not cold enough yet, we need a big cold front to come through, dropping temps to the negatives and then rain. Monitor BOM forecasts for Perisher and cross your fingers.

I go snow chasing every year in thr 4be if thats of any interest to you...
