  • Indicator / Turn Signal Problems

Hello to the wide PradoPoint community,

I have recently lost all indicators in my 2004 Prado. Symptoms are:

Turn on indicators via the stalk and nothing happens. No ticking
Hazards lights are fully operational with ticking, hence all globes are working
Fuse under bonnet labelled HAZ/Turn is not blown
Relay in the rear jack (Tow Point) is not clicking with indicators but is with Hazards

Is there another fuse or relay that operates the indicators that I am missing and if so where is it located.

Any help from all of the beautiful minds are there is greatly appreciated.

There is the good old indicator flasher can... which mind you, is no longer a metal can but an oversized relay. This can cause an issue. Vehicles typically still have individual cans for hazards and indicators. That would be my first thought. Plenty of other potentials, but this would be the most common cause.

      Thanks RanJ,

Any ideas where I would find this relay?

Have found this wiring diagram which doesn't seem to indicate any other relays but wiring diagrams are not my strong point!

forget what I said... the 120s use the same can for both hazards and turns. Mind you, it's a very simple circuit for the turns. In the steering column will be a white/black wire going to the indicator stalk (along with a bunch of others) this is the earth for the indicator switch. Flicking the switch will then join either the Green/Black or Green/Yellow to earth which is connected directly the flasher can.

If I was in your shoes, I would be grabbing a multimeter and see if either the Green/Black or Green/Yellow is connecting to earth at the flasher (Pins 5 & 6) when either is activated. If it is, throw a new flasher at it. If it isn't, I would do a continuity test on each wire between the stalk and the flasher and also verify that the white/black has an earth connection. If it isn't, you will need to located junction J15 (somewhere it'll be listed in the rest of the diagrams.)

          Thanks again RanJ.

          Hopefully the last question...

Where would I find the flasher unit? Is it the one in the rear jack compartment as the Trailer schematic seems to have the same flasher (T10) although I have read in other posts that this is solely for the trailer harness?

Thats correct, in thats it's solely for the trailer. You will locate it at the main fuse panel under the dash.... switch the hazards and follow the clicking. The clicking of your indicators is emitted directly from the flasher. To confirm it... put your finger on it and you will feel the mechanical click.

From memory the flasher unit is mounted on the back of the fuse box,
you may have to undo the nuts and pull the fuse panel forward to see it.

It could also be the dreaded clock spring!

Wouldn't be the clock spring would it? Considering the stalks are non rotational...

Depending on my memory, three screws and the indicator stalk assembly comes away from the column.

Sorry I stand corrected, yes your correct, mental slip. Could be the stalk switch, just as bad though as it will also be expensive if going OEM and it needs replacing.

Also just a thought, hit the hazard button and check all indicators are working,
never know and plug may have come out and a couple of bulbs aren't working
etc. Yeah unlikely but you just may be lucky.

                      I hate to imagine.

Just got a call from the missus... broken down with a flat battery.

After forking out for a new battery (old one was dying anyway), drove it come and put a tester on it.

Seems the alternator is not charging which may be the route of all evil in this case.

Maybe I should start a new thread for alternators, but in short can anyone give me any advice on what to look for in the way of getting the alternator to charge again. Will check all the connections etc at the back of the alternator when I get home but are there any particular fuses which may have gone that would cause the thing not to send a charge.

Is there a way to test the output of the alternator?

                        Thanks in advance

What voltages are you seeing key off? Voltage with engine running?

First off, did you have a charge fail light?

                            Second as RanJ wrote voltages?

Third check the ALT-S fuse in the engine bay, if its blown
                            the alternator won't charge.

Voltage is 12.6v both off and running.
Did not and do not see charge light come on when running however when turn ignition to on I cannot see that light on the dash.
The alt-s fuse under the bonnet is fine. Tried replacing it anyway to no avail
