  • Fitting Mesh tray or platform to Prado 150 with Factory Rails

    Hi All,
I have a 2010 Prado 150, with Factory Rails fitted.
Do a bit of camping with the kids, and need to add storage space to the roof top.
I have looked a the large Rhino Steel Mesh basket, or the Pioneer Platform Tray, with a Extra Large Rhino Bag.
Has someone tried this and was it successful.

Anyone else found a different solution great looking forward to hearing from you.

    James

I have thought of doing the same. Following is a thread I found a while ago of a Pioneer platform on 120 series roof rails, I haven't done it myself yet but I am considering it. One thing to be aware of is that Rhino don't recomend that you attach the rack this way, I'm not sure why but if anyone out there knows why I would be keen to find out.
The other option I have found is the Windchetah rack that connects directly to the factory rails but this is a fair bit more expensive than the Pioneer tray.

For the Rhino Pioneer Platform, it depends what size you wish to install on your 150. If you wanted the size originally suited to the 150, you will need to remove the roof rails and get the feet and legs to bolt the platform to. Otherwise, it is too long to fit on top of crossbars on the roof rails.
Otherwise, you can get shorter versions of the Pioneer platform rack and bolt them to cross bars which are installed on your roof rails. This will raise the height of the platform from your roof though, so it's not a good option if you have clearance issues.

Hi James I have fitted a Tigers11 bolt on roof rack which is good alternative to one which is mounted permanently. It is also made from alloy so nice and light and easy to put on and off.

Well I did some more digging and advice. Rhino have a platform that will fit the factory rails. 1928 x 1200 roughly. Saw an example outside the local TJM store and decided to order.
Will post some pics up when installed.

Heading off for the school holidays with my 2 boys (6 and 4) to Mungo.

            Cheers
            James.

Would love to see a photo of the tigers11. Gave them a rang earlier in the week but didn't have the same success.
              Cheers

Looking forward to seeing the pics, that is what I am looking to do for my 120 but it's been hard to find any examples to check out

This thread helped me choose. I went with the Heavy Duty Rhino 3 bar set from Toyota (in this thread). You can get them from Toyota at between $300 and $400, depending on the dealer. Aftermarket they sell closer to $600.

I'm looking at also getting a Pioneer tray and either mounting that directly to the feet or maybe mounting to the Heavy Duty bars.

Looking at 2 options from Roof Rack Superstore. Can anyone tell me which is the better / stronger of the two. Tradesman "Oval" flat platform 2000x1200 "to suit emergency vehicles" and Rhino 42102 being 1928x1236 on legs. Both require Prado 150 rails to be removed, but both sit low and will access most car park buildings. Both the same price fitted.

I went the rhino rack using aerobars straight off the factory rails.
While this way won't carry as much weight as replacing the factory rails the benefits out weigh that for me as well as being able to remove the rack easily. Also I don't want to carry too much weight that high anyway.

I have fitted Whispbars to my factory rails and a rhino mesh tray (roughly 1100x1800). Saves $$ and height. I like the combo as the whispbars are almost invisible. I also like the Rhino Platform. Click image for larger version

I have just fitted a Rhino Pioneer Platform to the factory rails. It's a 42102SXB, so a good size but nice low profile, but also means I can add side or front rails to it at any stage. Managed to do a great deal at the Melbourne 4x4 show! Apparently it's a new set up where the bracket attached to two bars is clamped onto the rails. The platform then fixes to the cross bars.

                          Cheers

Looks awesome. Did not know that it's possible with the factory rails. What are the brackets you got with the platform? Can I ask how much you paid?
