  • Time for Drawers- Advice please

After going away we realised we definitely now need better storage in the prado.
I have searched ALL the drawer threads on PP already. Some useful info but I have more specific questions.
I have narrowed my choice down to either ARB outback drawers made by 4wd interiors
    http://www.4wdinteriors.com/roller_drawers.html
    or Offroad systems Draws
    http://www.offroadsystems.com.au/products.html

    My requirements:-
I want a drawer setup to take cooking/camping material, tools, recovery straps and secure the ARB fridge to.
The fridge will sit on the left on a slide or the slide drawer top as per the outback solutions option.
They need to be easily removable

    My questions:-
    General
There seems to be two options for a drawer setup
    1. a flat set of 2 drawers side by side.
Advantage- still have a flat floor for carrying stuff when the fridge is out
Disadvantage, Fridge sits about 250-300mm higher up on the drawers. so hanger to get stuff in and out.
    2. the fridge sits on the left side at floor level and several drawers stacked vertically on the right hand side.
Advantage - the fridge is a lot lower and probably more usable to get stuff in and out?
    Disadvantage. No flat floor

    Specific to the drawer companies
    Outback Drawers
Advantage - have nice handles and a no slam finger mechanism . They are modular.
Disadvantage- no water tank option. See below. Height sits above my child anchor points.

    Offroad Drawers
Advantage - systems seems to be lower and hence can use my child seat anchors (a must).
They also have a nice option for a 35 litre stainless steel water tank that sits between the 2nd seats and the back of the drawers.
This would be very handy for us as we are constantly needing water, washing hands with the kids etc.
Disadvantage - Handles and finger savers not as good as outback solutions.

So from those of you that have used drawers, any guidance would be greatly appreciated
(Pricing seems to be about the same btw)
    1. Would you go for a flat 2 drawer setup or a fridge left and several drawers vertically on the right? and
    2. Which of the above two companies you think make a better product etc.?

    Cheers

I found the best option to be a flat two draw setup with a platinum drop side. This way you only need to remove the fridge slide to have a flat surface for day to day use and the drop slide provides easy access to the fridge.

I am with Leachy, you also could get a top shelf with the Outback drawers.
I know you have two manufactures in mind but have you look at Black widow http://www.bwidow.com.au/vehicles/To..._Prado_120.htm a friend of just got some and they look really good.

I agree with Leachy as well, the only disavantage of side by side is acess to the fridge, and a drop slide fixes this issue. I made my own drop slide, but for most people the platinum is the best option.

I have the Black Widow drawers, whilst they are good I am not sure I would nescesarily buy them again, most of the drawers on the market look to be pretty good from what I have seen.

I'll swap/sell you my 4 week old black widow drawers with inbuilt fridge slide for a set without fridge slide

Have you looked at bw? I looked at a lot of systems before settling with black widow as I thought the build quality was much better and that the drawers were a lot sturdier with better latching mechanisms.

This is what a lot of us did. Will give you some idea of the setups even if you can't be bothered.

Agree with Wooley. I spent a lot of time in various showrooms and 4x4 shows looking at every variation I could and BW came up tops for me. Personal preference but for me they are best build quality and I like their cargo barrier, shelf, centre divider and water tank options. Mine are going in on Friday.

Side by side with drop down fridge slide on left, divider and top shelf for me.

Also look at Tanami if you haven't, all aluminium, very light and still strong.

Great Idea. I did not think of that. Will look into the drop slide

                        Hi Gumboot

I have a set of Black Widow that I have altered, there is the drawer on the right side with recovery gear in it and on the left side I have a large fridge slide at floor level. I put our camping gear boxes on this and it also doubles as a table when required.

So that leaves the flat floor above that I have a Platinum drop down slide on the drivers side. This allows me to have the fridge down and access the camping gear at the same time.

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

Definitely. It's an expensive exercise to sell an inbuilt slide set and buy a non slide set.

Mate I have the BW drawers which were originally in my 90 series and now in my 150 and have been great. Whichever you choose, one thing to consider is the size of the drawers as I found some significant differences in length, width, height so I'd advise checking that out as you might find some or shorter or not as wide/deep as you think.

You can go down to Wood and You at Coopers Plains for that. The Timber drawer sets are lighter than the steel ones and a hell of a lot cheaper. If you want to go commerial, Black Widow as they are a bit cheaper than the outback brand. Don't get the set up with the sliding floor, just buy the ARB fridge slider and attach it to the left hand side, much cheaper option and more flexible. Buy it from the guys that did your diff lock and with the fridge, may bring the price down.

I was getting ready to crack open the circular saw with you but its all done now. I ended up getting a second hand flat 2 draw black widow setup and fridge slide. Right time/ place moment. They are in good condition and I am really impressed how solid they are.
