  • Replacing headlight

    Hi guys,

need to replace one of my headlights which is broken. The actual headlight itself not the bulb. Bought a 2nd hand light from the wreckers and have tried to put it in the other day but have had no luck in removing the old one.

Can get all of the screws undone except there is one screw right underneath which for the life of me i can't reach and can't see how anyone would be able to reach.

Anyone know of any guides to removing the headlight from the body? I will take a pic of the fastener i can't get to when i go outside.... (on the new replacement light)

    Re: Replacing headlight

does the bumper need to come off? I replaced the lights on the wifes astra and it was plug + play once the front bar was gone...

not sure how hard the bumper removal is on the Prado though!

post lots of pics when you suss it though. It would be a handy guide to reference!

      Re: Replacing headlight

I removed my headlight plenty of times, there is no screw underneath the light, however there is one in the corner. If you have a normal bumper, you need to remove the bumper bar. If you have a bullbar, then you can reach it by removing the mud guard in the tyres arch.
      Thanks

        Re: Replacing headlight

        Hi,

without the service manual, the next best thing is the website www.toyodiy.com (parts reference)

I used the exploded diagrams in there as a guide to find the securing points and how the connect. works for me.

Looks like I'm going to be removing the mud guard!

This is an old thread but need assistance

To replace a headlight, does the bumper needs to come off
            Factory bumper no bar

No. The battery out will help with space. I did it a few years ago, so my memory may be failing, but I'm pretty sure its only the battery that is in the way.

              Have fun.

Yes, there is a 10mm bolt from the side, it's under the plastic bar cover.

You can see the location of that bolt here:

scrap that, it was a lot easier than i thought to remove the screws for the rubber. Cheers

                        Hey Colcho,

                        Step by step pleeeeease.
My right side headlight seems loose and and was wondering the same about removing side bolt. I have a Sovereign bar.

                        Cheers

I actually removed the bolt sticking my arm in around where the grill goes and undid it blindly with a 10mm ratcheting spanner. When i did it up, i turned the steering wheel all the way left (to get the RHS light) peeled back a bit of splash guard and used the same ratcheting spanner to do it up.

After i did all that i had to take the philips screws out of the rubber piece that sits between the light and the bar to allow enough clearance to get the light out.

                          Hope that helps

                            How to replace your headlight

OK so I did this today and now see a thread asking for help:
You don't have to remove the bar fully and not even the touch the bull bar (ARB Deluxe)
if you have a bull bar pull inner guard out and start from point 7.

1: get tools. 10 mm 1/4 socket with long extension, blade screw driver .
                            2: undo inner guard bolts/screws x2
3: Undo 10 mm bolts/screws under the bar on the side
4: Undo 1x 10 mm bolt you will see a opening to slide your socket and extension and undo.
5: remove the 3 plastic trim clips in the center of the bar on top
6: Gently pull the side of the bar off. It pops. retained by clips
7: On the headlight undo the 1 on the guard 2 on the inside of the headlight.
8: where you pulled the bar off you can see a black 10mm bolt remove that and you are done

                            hope that helps

Prado 120 GXL 2007 with factory sovereign Bull Bar
I tried to remove my RH headlight last weekend and had the light totally free (and the black plastic skirt under the light removed) to move light around - but there was no way it was coming out unless the bull bar was lossened and moved forward at least 30mm or more
                              Unless i am missing something?

The top hoop of the bar did not allow enough room to manoeuvre the light out without the front face of the headlight hitting the bar hoop
I tried various ways of manipulating it but got nowwhere
I have new lights to swap in and will attempt this again this long weekend
                              Any tips appreciated
