  • Diff Breathers

    G'day All.

Just wanting to see if anyone has fitted the Pirana Diff breather kit to their 120?
The rear diff already has a one way cap on the breather. So not sure if anyone has bothered.
Has anyone done many water crossings with out the kit? If so, did you have to change the diff oil afterwards?
I look forward to your replies.

I've done Jim Jim Creek going into Twin Falls in Kakadu and got dropped in the surf at Fraser, both times up over the door mouldings so round the 700mm+ depth, used the spare on the rear as a depth guage at Jim Jim just in case a croc was hanging about. Have had no problems, just don't dive in when its real hot, keep the breather ends clear of mud after each trip and should all be good. I have only thought that it would need doing for a Vic High country trip with the crossings you need to get through.

I assume you have a snorkel already if you are thinking breather extenders?

If you're doing any water crossings, the breathers really should be extended. Even though there are caps over the breathers, they still open up when hitting water (the cold water hitting a hot diff causes the air pressure to open the breather, and water gets sucked in).

As mentioned by pradogxlv6, a very easy and cheap mod to do yourself, that can save you damaging your diffs with water contaminated oil.

I think I need to do this mod soon. Has anyone got some photos or advice. I haven't even had a squiz at the stock breathers yet.

Looking forward to some replies when I get back home from the farm on Sunday night.

          Hooray,

            Thanks for the info, Matt.

This mod might have to wait a week or two, yesterday was the new Hella DuraLeds (review and how-to to follow) and today was the start of the home brew alloy bash plate. Next after that is a decent mount for the GPS and PDA - I'm totally sick of picking them up off the floor after the suction doovey lets go when off-roading.

            Cheers,

Drew. (Too many hobbies - not enough weeks in a day!)

Thanks Bryce. I was attaching the suction bit to the side of the centre console, next to the ashtray, so it was pushing it a bit. The reason I did it there was to get the PDA down a bit lower and off the top of the dash.

I've since moved it up to the windscreen and it doesn't move at all.

I've done the bash plate - not very spectacular - haven't taken any photos of it yet. I haven't even had time to post photos of my Polyair install.

Driving lights next, then maybe diff breathers although making an auxiliary power feed to the cargo area might be first off the rank.

Crikey, no wonder my garden has gone to god. Anyone seen any spare time going cheap on eBay?

BTW Bryce, how did the IC-7000 install end up. What did you do for your HF mount?

                  Cheers,

                  Drew.

While doing the breathers, make sure you do the transmission/transfer breather. They both come up to a T and then up a bit more in the 1 tube. (but not high enough) When water goes down it goes into the transmission as it is the first tube of the T. It does not do the transmission any good when a litre of water gets in there (speaking from experience   )

                        Another thought....
Why don't people put the tubes from the diffs in through one of the rubber grommets on the firewall and up high behind the dash rather than just up the firewall in the engine bay.
I would have thought that if the water got up there, you would have other things to worry about other than water in the diffs....
Also by that stage the diffs would have cooled down and not be sucking anyway
