Last month I did a very bumpy crossing of The Simpson Desert from West to East in my 2012 Toyota Prado (Kakadu model, the one with rear air bag suspension and not coils)
Prior to travelling across The Simpson, I had the original suspension on my vehicle upgraded with new front springs (Kings) , new rear Air Bags (Air Bag Man) and 4 “Tough Dog” shockers . The OEM compressor/solenoids were left in place.
Unfortunately, the original air compressor used to inflate the airbags failed at the start of our crossing. To cut a long story short we had a very bumpy, uncomfortable trip across the desert and back home to the Gold Coast. As there was no provision for manual inflation of the OEM airbags, I now have had manual inflation valves installed on each airbag. We travelled with a mate in a GXL spec Prado with upgraded coil spring suspension. He had no problems with the crossing and so I thought that converting my rear suspension to coils might be a good idea for peace of mind.
Since returning home, I been unsuccessful in locating anyone to do the conversion and wonder if there is anyone who has done this conversion. I believe that some modifications to the rear of my vehicle would be needed as you cannot simply swap airbags for coils.
