  • Sway bar links. Washers

Hi, dumb question needing answer please.

I've just replaced my rear sway bar bushes and also installed two new links. Each new rear link came with 2 new bushes and 2 new cupped washers in the bag. When I installed them I first slid a washer onto the link, then a new bush, then the chassis, then the second bush, then the second washer, then the top nut...and repeated that on both sides.

Then I looked at the original ones I took off and noticed that I was seeing more washers! One link had 3 washers and the other 4!!

So, what's the correct way to install these please? Am I ok as I am? Or do I need to buy 4 more new washers so that there's a washer on each side of each new bush? (The old ones look a bit shagged)

    Any help gratefully received. Thanks

    No question is dumb.

Took a pic of mine as they have never been touched. Both sides the same as pic.
There is a third washer on the bottom rubber.

You could reuse a old one if you need to .

      Thanks rusty
Yes, one side came off like your photo. Somehow the other side has gained a washer!

Currently I have both sides installed (new) without your second washer up from the bottom I.e. Both bushes are in touch with the chassis. Do you think I should change it? Why would Toyota use 2 washers at the bottom and only one at the top?

There should only be 2 washers per side, ie nut>washer>bushing>sway bar>bushing>washer>connect

+1. The sway bar ends are typically cupped like a washer. Regardless... only 2 washers per side for correct fitment of aftermarket bushes. Especially poly.

Need to have 3 washers on either side as per the pic shown by Rusty62.
The washer in the middle has a spigot on it that locates into the chassis.
The hole in the chassis is much larger than the link pin.

              Regards, Jason.

                Thanks for your reply. Jason
But now I have 2 completely opposing opinions! Cry
I'm confused now. Your post make total sense but if there's supposed to be 3 per side you'd think that the "kit" would supply these, no?

The 3rd washer with the spigot may be hard to obtain. So they only supply you with 2 per side.

I bought some links off Jason from Wholesale suspension and these instructions can be found in the store section of this forum
Please note: When fitting to rear of vehicle re-use original Toyota Locating washer on top of lower bush as we have in Pictures.
Check the picture in the store section, mine is set up the same as Rusty's (from memory??)

Thx for all the replies. I'm still confused though. Lol.

Another question: So if the third washer is required to stop the bush from being "sucked" through the chassis hole, then why doesn't it need one on the top bush also? I.e. 4 washers per side?

It doesn't stop it being 'sucked' through the hole, just centres it to prevent the shaft from rubbing / wearing on the bracket.
