  • Bilstein 50mm lift with polyairbags

    Hi guys,

So I have been doing some research for a 50mm lift kit upgrade. Mine has now sagged and I want something decent that will withstand my vigouras off road punishment and heavy loads I some times carry when fully loaded with fuel, steel bar, winch, roof rack, etc etc...anyways I have been speaking to Jack from Auto Parts Co in Sydney and he said:

"For the front i'd recommend the HD coil to suit the bar and winch?

For the rear there are a couple of different options, we can either do a constant load HD coil, but itll be a bit firm when you're unloaded. Otherwise we can put a 0-300kg spring and a set of airbags in. That way when unloaded itll be comfortable but when loaded it will handle the load.

The airbags are an extra $295, But I can take 10% off that price if it is purchased in conjunction with a lift kit"

What are people experiences with the air bags? If they are used how they should and not over aired I believe they work well. Also if your running this setup I'd love to here your experiences.

    All up I'm looking at:

$1295 for a 2" Front & Rear Pre-Assembled Bilstein Lift Kit delivered to your door*

Our kit comprimises of the following:
2x Bilstein B6 Offroad Pre-Assembled struts with King Springs & brand new strut tops.
2x Bilstein B6 Offroad Rear Shocks
    2x 2" Raised King Springs

Same price stands for HD coils + 10% off $295 airbags if I buy them with the kit. All delivered to my door for no extra cost.

    Thoughts and experiences please??

I would not recommend EHD King springs if your not constantly loaded and as you say will be doing "vigorous" off-road work.
My experience is that the EHD King springs free length is too short and can come loose at full articulation, this allows the spring to move from its proper seat.
The reduced free length is no doubt due to the high spring rate requiring a shorter length in order to maintain the 35 -50 mm ride height increase.

I would go with HD springs, depending on how much you carry in the rear (bulbar, winch etc. will not affect the rear spring choice) the HD springs might suit without the air bags. For a cost saving of $29.50 I probably would try without the air bags first and if needed fit them later.

    P.S. Kings KTRR-59 300 lb/in KTRR-HD 380 lb/in so a substantial increase in spring rate

I cant comment on the billies/king combo but will on coil assist airbags.

In my opinion using a medium rate rear spring and Polyair/Firestone airbag is a no-brainer. You get the best of both worlds - comfort when not fully loaded, capacity to comfortably carry to your GVM, and get to keep the articulation that a heavy spring will resist.

Air pressures do need to be set before your load up and usual minimum of 5/6psi and maximum of 30psi applies but other than that they are set-and-forget.
      Cheers

        +1 to what he said.

I've got OME springs and Polyairs. Simple to use. I keep them about 5-8psi when unloaded (with drifta drawers). Pumping them up is easy, I just use my trusty bicycle stirrup pump. 5 or 6 strokes and its up to 25/30psi (Much quicker than breaking out the compressor). Then adjust by hand back to level, which is usually around 18psi when loaded and CT attached.

Thanks a lot for all your comments!

So from the feedback I have got I should be happy with:

At the front go HD springs (KTFR-58HD) for the bar and winch? And then at the rear go with (KTRR-59) springs with airbags?

Do you have a second battery under the bonnet as well?
I would drop King Springs an email re the spring rates for the front springs, My thoughts are run KTFR-58 not the HD springs. I found King Springs very helpful when contacted re the various spring rates and the load I carry.
For the last 6 years I have been running Lovells HD front springs with alloy bar, N70ZZ deep cycle under the bonnet, plus a supercharger as well, so I would think not that much difference to a steel bar and winch combo. I will be upgrading the shocks soon and will change to Lovells MD springs at the front and refit the MD rear springs with air bags at the same time or possibly Lovells HD springs as they have a spring rate between the Kings standard raised and HD raised rates.

I have read that the standard Bilstein shocks are valved too soft so perhaps do a search re Bilstein shocks.

              Yeh good idea mate.
No secondary under the bonnet, just running a N70. Then got a 130Ah deep cycle I take on longer trips when the car doesn't get used much.

We have the standard raised Kings with Bilstein combo. Airbag man bags in the rear coils. Ride is good empty with the bags at 5psi and when fully loaded, camper trailer, fridge, recovery gear etc run 15-20psi to correct ride height.
Front is 40mm on lowest clip, so could get an extra 20mm or so on middle or upper clip. Steel bar, winch and second battery.

                Rusty.
