  • cam belt time.....would you recommend to do water pump.

    Hi,
just about to order a cam belt kit . Some kits include water pump, belt, idler and hyd tensioner for about $260

what is the expected life of a pump on a 150. I have no leaks or loss of coolant. Should i leave well alone or change while all apart.

do most change belt and inspect the rest or do the whole lot..

    thoughts please...

I only do the pump if its leaking, the easiest way to spot the leak is some pink crusty stuff in a line on the timing cover, in line with the back of the water pump pulley. To be honest, the timing belt is so easy to do, even if you have to redo it when the pump fails it isn't a big concern. To change the pump out on a 150 you would be looking at about three times the labour than just doing the belt, add that to the pump and coolant cost for what? Just my opinion, but if it isn't leaking, leave it alone.

Mike - I would do it! Cheap insurance.

After my motor was rebuilt (due to a Toyota dealership blowing it up @ 90,000), my water pump starting leaking within 10-20,000km.

My pump lasted 140,000 km before it leaked

          X2 ^ absolutely agree!

It should leak anytime from now, if it makes 300k change it then.
Usually it's a slow leak which is very manageable.

Mine was done the other way around. Had a leaking water pump from about 120,000. Got it replaced at 125,000 service and had the timing belt and pulleys, belts done at the same time. Agreed with mechanic might as well do it now when everything is accessible than wait another 20,000 to 25,000.

If you guys have done one of these belt only, and then done the water pump you would realise how much extra work the water pump is, and how little work the belt is. The belt change is such little effort in these vehicles, one of the easiest timing belts i know of. I dont rate doing the timing belt as something to even think about on these, as easy as changing the oil and filter. If it took half an hour to just do the belt, tensioner, etc i would be surprised, they are so very simple.

What is the recommended interval for the timing belt?

                      Thanks for the replies.
There is a guy on ebay who does the kit with the pump all genuine for $239 plus post. Might go that way and do it all while i am in there.
                      cheers

                        That's good price or genuine.
                        Pump, belt, tensioner I assume?

With Toyota pumps being a common leaker, you might want to consider another brand.
Bursons brand, usually a GMB in the box (made in Japan) the gates tensioner from Repco/bursons same NTN tensioner, but cheaper.
Dayco belt from Burson or Repco, you will save a bit more, but it's not about that, it's about a better waterpump.
The GMB changes it back like the 1kz so u can easily change the pump next time without removing t-belt.

It's also important to check the idler bearing of the timing belt.
                            They are under $100 genuine.
Cheap insurance if the bearing makes even a whisper more than it should.

                              Hi ####.
Changed the belt , hyd tensioner and the idler.

the idler was pretty worn, had a bit of movement in the roller and sounded very loose and dry when spun by hand.

i dont think i will leave it till 150000 next time. I think maybe 120k is the life of these. You must have done plenty of these - do they general sound good or not at 150k
                              cheers
