  • Advice needed - 2010 150 Prado - Oil Leak on Turbo - Toyota want 5 grand to fix

    Hi All

Just got the news that Toyota want to fit a new Turbo due to an oil leak, the quote is 5000.00 bucks.

The Prado is still operational, the Toyota mech said it could fail today or six months from now.

It seems like a crazy price to me, I just wanted to ask all of you what you think my options are.

Is there after market turbos that could be cheaper that a Toyota one? Should I see if another mechanic can quote on it? anything else I could look at?

Hope someone can help.....5K seriously hurts me

    Cheers

Where abouts are you, then others may be able to recomend someone else to see for a second oppinion. I would definatly be seeking a second oppinion for that amount of coin, try a diesel specialist shop, they usually have someone who does turbos, or try a turbo specialist.

Gturbo does upgrades (more hp) for hilux's which would be transferable. Best to call him if you need answers as he can be hard to get hold of, however when it come to turbo upgrades - he is the man to talk to.

Thanks, I am in Emerald in central Queensland, probably could risk getting to Rockhampton.

What sort of km's? Is there a full service history? Are you the original owner?

I would be taking a closer look at Australian Consumer Law if you purchased the car after 2011.

If I recall correctly, there was a link on here for OEM turbo's for roughly 3k?

Take it to a Turbo specialist shop for second opinion & the work if needed.

MTQ Engine Systems have a outlet/workshop in Rocky, if their workmanship is anything like the Brissy workshop they are great. Might not be the cheapest out there, but then quality never is. They have workshops in Melbourne and Sydney too i believe, so warranty would be up and down the east coast. I would at least give them a try

This may be relevant. Suspect it's same part for 150 but best to check first.

I got my second quote, it is 3900.00 to get it all fixed, reputable bloke in town. It still sucks but at least it is close to what others have paid.

To add injury to insult, by alternator is broken aswell, gonna get both fixed at same time.

Anyway, thanks for your help everyone.

Can someone just remind me why we paid top $ for a Toyo ? something to do with longevity was it ? Turbo leaks and alternator probs at 100 K not good enough Toyo
not good enough at all !!!

Just to keep it in perspective, I just bought an AMG Merc and notice some guys are already having turbo issues with theirs. Made made product - man makes it, man F%$#^ it up and man fixes it - No manufacturer is infallible unfortunately. I made sure I got the Toyota extended warranty thrown in and I will turn mine over (not literally) before its out of warranty.

Yes I know where your going but my point is I owned a 90 series for years took it up 220 K's with not an issue and now all of a sudden the new "improved" Prado is going wrong at an unacceptable short span, the whole point being why are paying for an item thats supposed to last longer than most when it's clearly not ? dont get me wrong I love Prado's but I'm beginning to suspect we're paying for Toyo's past track record and not what we're actually getting now, only time will tell how the 150 will pan out but for me there's too many reports for my liking ie a post the other day of a 150 going bang at 160 K's and had a service every 5000 K's now thats a worry and it just shouldn't happen, so is that why we dont get a five year warranty ?
could it be Toyo dont have the confidence others have in their vehicles ?

I too have a 2010 Prado that I have been told has an oil leak on the turbo and needs to be replaced.

After looking at the turbo which is really difficult there is oil all over the intake side of it to me it looks like it is dripping from above onto the turbo.

Is there anything above the turbo that could be leaking and dripping oil on to the turbo rather than the turbo its self leaking? There appears to be no oil on anything around the turbo that i can see so not squirting out of the turbo. Mine has less than 80k on the clock. Always serviced by Toyota and purchased from new.

Also there is Red gasket goo sealing the two parts of the intake side of the turbo. Is it like this from factory?

This is a view from the bottom.

                              Any help appreciated.

                              Thanks.
