  • Advice for the worst treatment for a diesel

    G'day,

So my diesel Prado gets exactly what it shouldn't and I'd like to know what I can do to mitigate this as best I can.

The car is my wife's daily driver so every morning it gets started up... Driven 3 minutes to school... turned off for 20 mins..... turned on again and either 3 minutes home or 5 minutes to the shop. Then it's the same at the end of the day. Every other day it might get a 15 minute run during the day. A couple of times a month it gets a run up the freeway or a weekend of 4wding. Usually does a big trip once a year.

I know that the best solution would be if the my wife walked the kids to school... I've tried it ain't happening.

Just checked my oil (done 75k) it gets serviced every 10k. I reckon the oil looks black. After looking on here I am going to get an oil and filter change and then every 5k between services. Probable Castrol magnatec or Castrol Edge 5w 40.

Question is, is there something else I can do in regards to maintenance, additive or mod to help mitigate against the short drive abuse.

I look forward to seeing the advice and expertise that follows.
    Cheers in advance

About all you can do is,

Use a 5w oil. A really good one.
    Penrite.

That will help with the wear on start up.
Full zinc, that is a coating that protects engine parts. Like magnatec without the fancy marketing name. But the zinc does reduce over time, this is another reason why you cannot change your oil too much.
I recommend 5000k oil changes on any engine you really want to look after.
Change the oil a lot if its short trips & low Klm's.
    3000klms perhaps?
Leave the oil filter till 10,000klms, it will last much longer than that!

Take it for a 20k run once a week.

5k oil changes it is. Thanks.

If changing the filter isn't necessary I know some on here argue that it is (my
Non mechanical gut feeling is it should be changed) then I should just do it myself. It's as simple undoing the drain plug, putting it back in and filling it up right..??

What's the etiquette with the mechanic i.e do I tell him what oil I want to use or do I supply it ? I'm assuming either is ok

Ask your mechanic what oil he uses and tell him what oil you want to use and why. if he is a decent mechanic he will give the right advice and work with you your paying for the service! if he won't, find another one.
I've had a good relationship with mine, working like this for around 10 years now.

          Anthony,
Do you drain the filter at 5K intervals or just dump the oil form the sump and replace?

The oil will go black virtually straight away after being replaced. That is perfectly normal.

Charge the battery once every month or two and top up the water as required so you get decent life out of it.

If your Oil in a diesel isn't going black, that's when you have a problem!

Definitely with you on that one. Buy her a bunky for her school runs. Keep the Prado for your-self. I do.

A daily drive like that should be a Mazda 2 - like my wife's. I drive the Prado it's mine!

No definitely not necessary, some may argue. It's a long life filter & it won't stop filtering.
Manufacturer recommendations vary, Toyo generally 10k, some 12.5,15 & 20k, I have seen them on a lot longer & never had an issue.
Stick to 10k if you can. If it was a $5 oil filter you may well just change it, but for your engine it's one of the most expensive spin on filters.
                          Not required so save $35.00.

It is a simple task, but for some it's easy to go wrong, I hope it doesn't sound extreme, but if you are not familiar & if you are prepared to use a torque wrench you will be ok, it only needs to hold the oil in without coming loose. 34nm. Overtightening can cause damage. A new washer from Toyo is recommended. Although I have reused them & never had a leak, great washers those Toyota ones.
If your going to DIY supercheap is ok on oil & stock up a couple when it's 20% off.
Or Repco, they often have 20% off on weekends.

Anything from 6.3 to 7.5 ltrs of oil will be required depending how long it drains, if its level or not and if you change the filter or not.

                          No don't touch the filter.

Peeps, If changing the oil filter lightly oil the seal, make sure the old seal is removed, make sure the sealing surface is clean.
Don't try & get the old oil out from under the filter, you will be there for a while for no gain.
Do it up as tight as you can by hand. Check once warmed up.
Clean up around oil filter which will also flush the oil filter drain tube, degreaser.

Finally after all work road test & check for leaks.

Unfortunately it's got to be her car for school runs and shopping, I need a ute for work.

The other thing is I get a hundred different answers when I try to find out is when the best time to check the oil level. It seemed low to me that's what prompted my question in the first place. When I checked it had been idling for about 5 mins while I was checking something else, then switched off and I thought oh I will check the oil. Properly not the best tme hey

                              On flat ground.
                              Engine off for 3 minutes.
To the full mark, but not over it.
