My D4D seems to have a strong exhaust smell . Sure it's a diesel but I have to drive with the windows up or I smell fumes .Its especially noticeable when the drivers window is down but I've been under the car with the engine running and there's no obvious exhaust leaks . This was confirmed by the dealer . Any ideas please ? Cheers Ross

If not!.... Does it make a rattle noise (Catalytic converter) when you hit it with your fist like there is loose bits inside of it?
If so then the catalytic converter has burnt out! (I think this is highly unlikely but it is a step in the right direction).
If happy that the catalytic converter is intact then a good culprit for making the fumes extra toxic (Also can make your eyes smart) is fuel cleaners or fuel additives!!.. I know some may flame me for saying this but some fuel cleaners can make the exhaust gases a bit toxic on the nose and make your eyes smart.
To confirm that your exhaust has no leaks get a rag (So the exhaust gases don't burn your hand) and push it as hard as you can onto the tail pipe so that gases cant escape and if any holes in the system it wont take long before you hear a hissing noise!
Obviously you will get a hissing noise from the flex joint ahead of the cat when pressure gets very high... This is normal.
Cheers

If you remove the catalytic converter the Diesel gases are very toxic and your eyes will smart especially when in traffic!
Also!.... If you remove the catalytic converter and you add injector cleaner to your fuel the toxicity of the exhaust gases are very noticeable!.... One can only guess whats happening to your engine oil stability?
I don't care what people do either way but that is how it goes!
If your rig is manufactured with a catalytic converter it has to/ supposed to stay there!....
Remove the catalytic and you may provoke the law to take action!! Lol
If you look carefully the two vehicles in the background still have there cats!

Hi Guys,
I have 2007 D4D that has developed this smell after the last service. Same symptoms window down and smell comes through the aircon. I have looked at the grommets into the cabin on the firewall and the rear towbar. All seem to be intact.
Vehicle has 150K km on the clock and has never missed a beat.
I am at a loss to the cause. Any help appreciated[B]Cheers

Is it actually an exhaust smell or something else? A couple of months ago I was driving around and every time I stopped at a set of lights I could smell a strong sulphur smell, like the smell that comes out of unleaded car exhaust sometimes. Turns out my 2nd battery was cactus and giving off sulphur. Any chance that this is the problem?2010 GX Turbo Diesel
