  • Fuel filter warning

Hey guys, I've got a 150 kakadu, just went away to the snow for the weekend(last minute decision). I've got 82,000 on the clock, haven't got around to getting it serviced yet... Booking it in this week coming. Buuuutttt...... I've just had the warning light and a MSG saying 'fuel filter maintenance required" I'm hoping this is just because its over due for a major service but not quite sure. Can anyone help me out? I left a voicemail on my mechanics ph but he probably won't check it till Monday.
    Cheers guys.

There is no scheduled service interval for the under bonnet filter, it is only due to be changed when the warning light comes on. Seems like a dumb way to go to me but that's the way it is supposed to work. So in your case it probably just means that its getting a bit blocked and needs replacing.

It doesn't sound like it from your description but the light can also come on if it gets a bit of water in the system. I think on the sun visor in the 150 is a sticker that gives you a run down on what to do in that situation, maybe just have a look at that as well, but given your description that's probably not the issue.

    Cheers Andrew

Cheers Andrew that makes sense... Well not the Toyota side of things... You would think it would be a scheduled replacement. And bush basher, where is the water trap ?

There's a little white plastic tap on the bottom of the main fuel filter assembly. It is supposed to be purged regularly - the dealer will crack it every 10K service.

Personally I run a big pre fuel filter in front of my stock filter, I bin both filters ever 20,000km. I used chemtech diesel power cleaner/conditioner in every fuel fill.

Just did a 3000km return outback trip with zero fuel issues. Consistency is the key with Prado fuel systems. Once the idiot light comes on the dash, you can bet ya balls the filter is bypassing and unfiltered fuel is going straight into the fuel pump.

That's a little extreme. You must have shares in the filter company. If the primary filter under the car is getting changed every 20K too that's 3 filters your binning every time. I run the Racor in between the OEM filters too. The way I see it, the last filter isn't having to do much work at all. I wouldn't be chucking mine every 20K at nearly $100 a pop.

Might also be due to Alpine Diesel going though your system. I understand it has a wax or something in it to stop it from freezing. Maybe its slower to pass through the filter bring on the lamp??

Alpine diesel is low wax so the wax doesn't form and clog filters. Very likely to be water so follow the instructions in the manual ASAP.

fair call Dave. My car owes me 80k plus at the moment and from being a diesel mechanic for a long time, i sleep easier knowing I'm investing in protecting my fuel system; but everyone is different.

I have the same problem in my ZR. Warning message came on and I thought no problem I will get the filter changed when I get the next service (only a week away). OK had the service and filter changed but they could not get rid of the warning. The fault doesn't even come up on there computer diagnostics either. They recommend I speak to Toyota about it but I know they are going to want my first born as part payment to look at it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If the light is steady (ie not flashing), then it indicates that the flow rate through the sensor is less than the specified rate. Generally this is the first sign that your filter is starting to clog. Whenever mine has come on, it has been when I have put the boot in up a hill or overtaking. I had it once around 50,000km and then again around 100,000km. It can be reset :
                        1. Ignition off
                        2. Unplug sensor (plug on top of fuel filter under the bonnet)
                        3. Ignition on
                        4. Plug in sensor
                        5. Start the vehicle and the light should have cleared.

It doesn't throw up any codes, as the light is the indication. I've reset it and driven to the next service (about 1500km on) before changing it out.

If the light is flashing, then you've likely got water in your fuel and this is a much more serious condition.

If mine had come up 20,000km after I had previously changed the filter, then I'd be concerned about dirty fuel and change it asap, but as it was 50,000km and that was the life of the previous one, I wasn't really all that concerned.

Unfortunately scheduled maintenance is making way for maintenance on demand in many industries (ie aviation), and it's mainly driven as a cost saving measure, but there's nothing stopping you from having it replaced whenever you prefer.

Thanks heaps. Worked a treat first time. You have saved me a huge headache. I will be changing the filter every 30,000Ks I think.

                            No worries, Woopi.

The disclaimer is that I'm not a mechanic. This is just info I have picked up from discussions around the traps.

Ps. Whoever you had you car with should have known how to clear a light and that it wouldn't throw up a code... I imagine they should, anyway.

Since that's been the way to clear that light on all diesel hilux's since 2005, diesel landcruiser's since they went V8, and prado's since they went common rail I would of expected so..........
