  • 10w40 best oil to use???

Hey guys. Just wanted everyone's opinion on the engine oil they are using (type and brand)
I heard Penrite 10w40 would be best.
Just bought a GXL 2014 Manual Diesel.

    Thanks heaps.

Any name brand oil that meets the required specs. Preferably the one thats on special that day.

Saying one is better or worse than the other is complete bollocks.

Sorry, have to disagree, strongly. However, any name brand quality oil will do the job fine. If you like the Penrite product go for it, it is good and I have seen no problems using it. I personally use Castrol Tection Global ES because we have it at work, so I get it for a largely reduced price (free). I would not be putting the cheap budget oil from supercheap or any of the recycled oils in my 60k investment, the appear to not do as good of a job holding the particles in suspension (dispersants) and also allow build up to form quicker (detergents). Castrol, caltex, etc all do have their cheap crappy oils that don't have the required additives for modern diesel engines so make sure you read the label well, and once you choose an oil i would always recommend stick with
that oil, dont chop and change

You strongly disagreed, then repeated my statement. Please explain?

Name brand Quality, most name brands also have a budget version, which is as good as home brand oil from woollies. And buy whatever is on special, I wouldn't chop and change the oil type my car runs every service, I have seen some oils additives that can react against each other over time and become inefficient at doing there job. Different oils have different qualities, for example my mate has a fzj100 and had problems when running one of the castrol GTX oils, went to a Penrite oil, same weight, and it stopped most of the oil useage which was only occurring on long highway runs. The Penrite oil also had to be changed early for the first 2 oil changes as the oil appeared to be getting burnt, after a quick call to Penrite they said it is some additives reacting with other oils, and it should sort itself out within 2 changes, sure enough all good. So the first point you made i agree with on a level, but to buy whatever is on special i strongly disagree. I probably should have made myself clearer, sorry for the confusion.

            Hello 30CRUZ,

Google "Bob is the oil guy" and the "Car bibles" and then think about their suggestions before making a decision. Food for thought regarding oils.

            regards

            Ross

Being a brand new vehicle, I assume you are considering doing 5000km changes yourself and having Toyota do the 10 000km services to maintain your warranty?
In that case why not just stick with what Toyota use, you can buy it straight over the counter from Spare parts, that way you are not using different oil types every 5k and gives less reason for Toyota to reject any claim should there be one.

This is what I do, the filter and 10 litres of semi synthetic oil is around $115.00.

This discussion reminded me of the old ad in the 1960s-70s. "Oils aint oils".

This quote reminds me of 'trust british paints, sure can' - but not for good reasons...

That's if the dealer is using the same oil in the drum as what they sell over the counter in 5L bottles.

I didn't say "buy whatever is on special". As for everything else - I have seen these discussions go around and around and around in all sorts of motoring circles, with very little actual knowledge involved. Unless you're racing or involved in some sort of speciality, name brand with the required specs, changed regularly is fine. Five litres of oil is quite expensive now, so shopping around for the quality oil thats on a discount can be worth it.

Good point, but a dealer wouldn't lie to me, would they?

Not at all. Thats why a Mercedes Sprinter costs $500.00 just for an oil change at a Mercedes dealer. Mercedes don't use Mobil 1, they use "specially formulated Mercedes oil" "Sir".

Just a reminder, according to the ACCC, you do not have to take your vehicle back to Toyota to maintain your warranty, just a qualified mechanic is fine, there are dealers out there still spruiking the 'you've got to bring it back to keep your warranty' BS.
