  • TJM Airtec Snorkel Question Help

Exhausting all other avenues I have turned to PP for help, I just had fitted an airtec snorkel on Friday to my new VX, have noticed that it does not have any "drain holes" for any water / rain drops that would enter the snorkel head when driving in rain.

Taking a punt others have the same snorkel fitted to their 150 Click image for larger version

ID:	660436... should I be concerned???

Not being mechanical except for the basics and what I learn from here, but knowing that water into the air intake is not a good idea, I read over carefully this site and the TJM info sheets before fitting a snorkel, with TJM info stating:

"Even when it rains the TJM Airtec design captures and disperses rain drops through drain holes at the base of the air ram. This feature removes excess rain from mixing with the air stream and preventing water intake during heavy rain"

    am I missing something??

    thanks in advance

Yes I think your missing something, the drain holes are at the base of the air ram, that's the snorkel head in other words, at least that's case with the safari. As for the odd droplet of water this system misses, then given the air flow this will just evaporate and go through the system just like humidity does every time we drive.

As I said in the other thread you asked this, no one else is concerned so talk to TJM.

Do the 150 air boxes have the three little holes at the bottom (I am led to believe these exist in the 120's - yet to check mine, its on the list) - maybe they expect the water to drain out there

My air box has 3 holes at the bottom that were blocked to prevent water coming into the air box during deep water crossings I guess. I have since removed the plugs as I have found in very heavy rain that the air box does get water in it. It does run out the "duck bill" but I have found the filter does feel damp from all the terbulance. Removing the plugs allows all water to drain quickly as the normal dust "duck bill" is not at the lowest point of the box.

          Hope this makes sense.

I think blocking those three holes is a waste of time, if your sucking in water through those holes then you have stopped in very deep water, so your Prado is a write off anyway. Better to leave them open to drain the odd few drops that find there way in.

Thanks everyone for your reply's, greatly appreciated.

Andrew there are no drain holes at the base of the ram. As far as I can see the only way out for the rain drops is over the small lip at the front of the ram head where the cut out is.

VeeZeeSS yes it makes sense, although I will not be removing these plugs.

My lack of mechanical knowledge maybe over estimating the amount of rain drops that may enter the ram head.

mjrandom - thanks for your input - again, I'm a little confused on how you feel you can comment on behalf of everyone on this site, I would have thought PP'ers would choose to respond based on if they have a 150 with a similar snorkel, as did VeeZeeSS has choosen to. From the threads I see and read, many PP'ers are more than happy to offer advise based on their experiences and or skills, one the things that makes this an excellent site to source help and information for "learner 4wheel drivers" starting out like myself.
