  • service by km's or months?

    Hi all,
Recently purchased an automatic 150 series diesel with 22,000kms, 33 months old. It's had all scheduled 6 monthly services. Last one was 30 month/50,000km, done @21,000km, 3 months ago. Next one due in 3 months/or @ 60,000km! Should I:
    1. do the 36 month/60,000km service, probably @ about 25,000km
    2. just do a 30,000km service (oil/filter changes), probably in about 9 months
    3. something else?
And then what, go by km's or age?
    Thanks in advance!

If u are not doing the kays then must service by months otherwise void warranty.

Agreed if it's under warranty you MUST go by months if not doing k's or they will have a way out of any issues. Once out of warranty then it's up to you.

        Hello RDC,

Do the next service by the book using genuine parts, then search for the recommended oils on the net til you decide on an acceptable oil and filter combination.

I am in the same boat as you, 36 month service at 41000km. I intend using a top quality synthetic oil 0w40 probably which will easily do 12 months and will change the filter at 6 months. I have chased filters until I am blue in the face and cannot find any real test data showing particle size and beta ratings so I am staying with the toyota filter for now and changing often.

Ryco Z418 is the recommended ryco replacement filter and a Z131A is twice the length, same diameter and same seal diameter and will fit onto the engine but I am wary of changing to the Z131A until I get some real data on its filtering standards.

Use the best oil you can get which meets or exceeds the specs, You cannot change oil and filters too often, it just wastes a small amount of money if you do not use the oil to its design limits. Who knows what you can stretch the intervals out to but if you go too far and stuff the engine it gets expensive.

10,000 km, even 15,000 km, and 12 months seems to be well within the limits in our climate, Northern hemisphere or snow conditions all day every day will kill oils really quickly due to wax buildup. Using a thinner oil will allow flow quickly on startup and will not effect the hot performance. Google search and have a read of Bob is the Oil guy. very helpfull.

        Happy researching oils and filters.

        regards

        Ross

0w40 is a bit light. The 0w may cause oil to end up in the intercooler when the oil gets very hot (our summer).

Do the handbook services by the book by Klm's.
Do intermediate services in-between. Oil change every 5000klms or 6 months.
Brake fluid & coolant changes by time.
The rest is fine to wait for the Klm's to come up.

Hey ####, hate to be a nazi but I would add timing belt to the list of by time. Do it every 7 years even if it has only done 20,000Km. I wouldn't want my engines health relying on a elastic band that is more than 7 years old

Yes - but you might be able to extend it while you are still under warranty (a wise move if you can afford to) - given the number of D4D failures of late.
