  • D4D shuts off during steep climbs

    Hi guys,

This one is for a friend and his D4D Hilux (1KD-FTV). We were trying to climb Mt Pinnibar last weekend and his engine kept shutting off.

    SYMPTOMS:
Whilst driving, the engine oil light would start flashing, then moments later then engine shuts off.

    SCENARIO:
It occurred several times during steep climbs, and once immediately after a steep climb (within 30m of climbing). Steep offroad grades in all cases. I suspect it's angle related as it never occurred whilst on the highway to/from Sydney (which includes quite a few hills that would create a decent turbo load).

It occurs in low or high range.

We didn't notice any odd noises.

It was mid afternoon so outside temps would have been around 2-10 degrees, and the engine warm as we had been driving 500+ km that day. Altitude was between 600m and 800m.

    VEHICLE:
140,000 kms. Recent service included the timing belt and all oil changes. A large portion of the tank had alpine diesel.

I've only ever troubleshooted petrols so any ideas at all would be appreciated.

Yes, levels were fine... however you've reminded me that a small amount of oil had pooled below the oil filter, so the filter was a little loose from the recent service. It was not enough leakage to escape beyond the catching area.

        Oil level switch shut off?

It's drivers side near the front of the sump.

          Hi Glen,

The engines are known for a clogged oil sump screen. Have you checked that?

            Thanks guys,
The clogged oil sump screen sounds like a possible culprit, and easy to fix which is a bonus!

If it is the pump screen it is not going to be a cheap fix!

Why's that mate? I assumed it'd just be a matter of removing the sump and cleaning it - cheap and easy. Of course that's not fixing the cause - injectors - is that the expensive part you're referring to?

                  Glen,

Good idea to drop the oil & check it, if it is blocked, the chances are it has blow by. The injectors should be replaced at those Klm's based on current info regarding 1kd-ftv injector & seal problems. You are correct to clean it.
I'm suspicious it's not a blocked oil screen, as if the oil light came on its usually too late.
Definitely an interesting one, please let us know what u find

As above, blocked screen is indicative of injector seal failure.

Which oil tell tail came on the level or the pressure?

                    Cheers

If the light flashed and the engine shut down, it is defiantly NOT caused by a blocked pick up (assuming it is a regular type flashing, regular interval computer generated style). It is more likely either the oil level is low or the sensor in the side of the sump is playing up. Modern toyota diesel engines shut themselves down in the event of a roll over, etc. This is done with the sensor in the side of the sump. I would be checking the wiring to this sensor, draining the oil and removing the sensor and replacing it. I would also check the amount of oil that actually came out of the sump to insure the oil level was correct, and the general condition of the sump (dents etc). If you know someone with a scan tool and you can replicate the fault, go for a drive and monitor it as it shuts down to confirm what I'm saying. If it was the pick up blocked, the oil light would be on solid or flicker and the engine would run until seized.

Sounds like all the oil is going to back of sump and low oil level switch is shutting engine off.. That's where I would put my money..
