  • Warning lights / turbo

    Good Evening

    Your help / advice please.

I own a 2011 TD VX Prado, with 69900 kms on the clock. It is well serviced.

On the weekend I was towing the camper trailer when the traction control, engine warning lights came on and the 4 Lo light started flashing. The turbo sounded different with the whistling sound louder at lower revs (like a siren). We drove on to the destination about 20kms with the lights on.

Of interest, 4 Lo could not be engaged when this was happening (testing the controls)

On Monday morning the lights were initially off but came back on after 50kms during the return journey.

I rang the local Toyota dealer resulting in the vehicle being looked at today (Wednesday 11 June 2014).

I arranged for the 70K service as well.

On pick up, they said it was sooty, they identified the codes and 'actioned' this (although could not tell me what that meant) they then said to monitor and if it happens again they recommend the turbo be replaced at a cost of $4500.

My warranty expired in January 2014. Should Toyota honour a repair or replacement given the cost and date of purchase of the vehicle, given the price of the vehicle and the 'Toyota Tough' branding? I question quality and durability.

To add to my concern I am heading to the Kimberley's end of next week and will not appreciate a failure at Kalumburu. ( I shared this concern with Toyota today)

    Any advice or experience appreciated.

    Regards

    Keeper

You're joking, right? Warranty expired - good luck. Bring your credit card. Renting cars or flying out of Kalumburu can be expensive.

        Hello Keeper,

Join RACV or whatever your local equivalent is called and go for total care with unlimited free towing, you are heading for an isolated place with no support facilities and to attempt this adventure with an existing fault is inviting trouble with corresponding expensive bills.

My Landrover Disco 2 had the engine ECU die at Steep Point WA and we were towed some 400 km. back to Geraldton a few years ago. Even with RACV total care we had to talk long and hard to get towed for free. Even phone calls are not cheap out in the sticks. The bill was supposedly $2500.00 according to the driver because we had a dead car and a Camper trailer to be recovered.

        Get it fixed then go.

        regards

        Ross

I don't think there is unlimited free towing. You will also need to check whether they start counting the km from their depot or from your breakdown location.

            Gday Keeper

Here is another cheap option for a genuine turbo for your rig but may take up to 4 - 6 weeks or maybe sooner but is worth the wait if have the time.

These turbo's are normally bullet proof and take a lot of punishment/ High k's before they fail?

Do you have any engine mod's of any sort or is it stock?

Click on links below and it is for the complete genuine turbo unit with gsk's! (Bolt on).

            Amayama TURBOCHARGER SUB-ASSY - $1,766.61

Amayama GASKET, TURBO TO EXHAUST MANIFOLD - $5.47

Amayama GASKET, COMPRESSOR INLET - $3.33

Amayama GASKET, TURBINE OUTLET ELBOW - $4.53

            Total = $1,779.94 Plus delivery.

Not including labor to fit or freight that's $2,720.06 cheaper than Toyota's so called cost price?... Is labor @ Toyota that dear?

Maybe hiring a car could be a cheaper option whilst waiting for parts unless going on a holiday with the rig?

If pushed for time i would go through "gspy4u" if can get parts to you sooner!

Just some options to think about if works for you.

            Cheers

how would you know that replacing the turbo will fix it?
They usually only go due to lack of oil / cooling /lubrication or dirt . No point putting a new one on unless you now what caused the problem in the first place.

is there an underlying issue that needs looking at?
is it worthwhile to throw a new set of injectors at it?
What condition are the current injectors in?
what does the " it was sooty "mean?
Why would it be sooty, or sootier than it should be and how does a new turbo fix that?
Is the EGR valve working ok?

can you get a second opinion?

Seems to me that just throwing a turbo at it, unless there is proof that the turbo is the only issue, could a waste of time.
Would also want to know the cause of soot/carbon build up. Anyway I am not a mechanic just thinking aloud here.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

                Thanks all for your comments.

The car was delivered back to Toyota this morning and some further testing and conversation took place with the local dealer and Toyota Australia.

Agreement was reached that the turbo needs replacing and Toyota will be doing it under warranty. They have ordered the parts and car is booked in on Thursday, with a guarantee it will be ready for departure for our adventure.

                Regards

Hi keeper. Just today I was mucking around with the air filter box. I took it apart and while doing so unplugged the sensor directly on top of this. When I started the engine with all that disassembled low and behold I had the engine light on, 4 LO flashing and traction control light. Put it back together and it disappeared. Freaked me out I thought what next. Pulled it apart again and same thing. Could be coincidence or I have issues too. Interestingly I had the front right wheel bearing replaced last week and my first thought was abs sensor as this would definitely disable traction control and probably not allow 4LO. Anyway I would check that that the air filter sensor and connector is sound. Did you replace the air filter recently? Anyhow worth a look see ...cheaper than a turbo
