  • Air Bleeding Procedure After Fitting 2nd Fuel Filter

    Hi all,

I've just fitted a Donaldson fuel filter/water separator but am yet to connect the fuel lines to it until I understand the procedure for bleeding the air our of the lines.

The head unit has a small bleed valve on top to let the air out, but is it just a simple matter of pumping the primer on the main filter until the air is expelled?

I can't see a bleed point on the main filter or have i just not looked close enough?

Could someone explain how I should go about this?

    Thanks,

    Dobbo.

I have a third filter also. When I installed it and on the weekend when I changed all three fuel filters at once, all I did was pump up the primer on the factory filter housing and it fired up first go, no issues at all. I did have to pump it quite a lot to get some resistance on the primer.

    Cheers Brad.

It may depend on whether you mounted the filter before or after the original filter, but either way these motors should self prime if you wind them over long enough, so just expel the air as best you can from the new filter, pump the primer on the OE filter and if it stalls then pump up the OE primer again and wind it over.

        Thanks AJ.
I installed it before the OEM filter.

I installed mine before the original filter. Made an "L"shaped bracket, using existing threaded holes in the body. Didnt cut or remove any of the hose that was conected to original filter, so if ever a problem, can just put it back to original. Just used the primer on the original filter to fill new one up.

Takes quite a while to prime using the little hand pump.

I didn't know that you could prime it by turning over the engine, can someone confirm this?

I tried starting the motor to fill 2nd filter, ran for about 3 seconds, then stopped. I cranked over for about 5 seconds, gave up, and pumped primer. Yes, did take quite a few pump strokes, but when primed, started almost as fast as normal. My 2nd filter is a 3 micron Staindine.(may be spelt wrong)

                  Air bleeding pumping time

When you say "quite a while" does that mean 2 min or 15 min? I've been at it 3 times now for up to 7 min.
                  Thanks.

You dont want to crank the engine continuously to prime the system, it puts too much stress on the starter motor and can over heat. Use some start ya bastard instead if you want to do it that way.

You want to use the bleed screw that is the highest (I have not bleed the factory filter yet as I am new to this Prado). Crack the bleed screw and then prime. When fuel is coming out the air has been bled from the system. If there is no bleed screw on the factory unit, crack the bleed on the pre filter and pump until it is full and them prime with the factory unit.

I use this method with both the Hilux and the tractor (three filters - last filer is the highest).

                      Interesting guys,
Was looking at putting second filter myself , im thinking is it a matter of taking inlet pipe from original filter and put that on the new filter then, out of the new filter into inlet of original filter , is it that simple.
                      Thanks boys,
                      Alan.

I reckon i primed for 3 or 4 minutes. Once i saw some in the glass bowl, was quick after that.

Yes, Dabeanian, that is exactly what i did, no cutting of original hose, just used a piece of quality Diesel fuel hose from new filter, into original one. Make sure of a nice curb in hose, dont want to have sharp bends, leading to possible restriction in flow.

After having all three filters off at once, it took up to 50 pumps to feel some resistance. I might have also pumped a little through with the drain cock open first.

                            Cheers Brad.

That sounds about right Brad. The little pump on my tractor filter can have me pumping for minutes trying to get a prime. You always know you are pumping fuel because you get a good feel (resistance) when its finally coming through.
