  • Fault Code P0405

On the last day of a week of driving tracks at high altitudes my Prado gave me a P0405 fault code. Engine Fault was lit along with Traction Control Off and the 4x4 indicator was flashing. I do not know if the vehicle was speed restricted as I was on tracks but I could not shift from Low Range back to High Range without clearing the code. So my first comment is 'if you cannot read and clear codes, go spend a few bucks and get the gear you need'. I have a Scanguage and checked the code against my printout and P0405 was not on the sheet but it was in the exhaust area so I cleared it and checked if I could engage high range and I could. This code came up five times over two days and each time I needed to change ratios I cleared the code first. I have noted that all faults were at over 1600 metres and now know is is the EGR fault code. In the past week the code has not reappeared so do I have a problem or is the computer confused with high altitude?

Just once, it came back after climbing to 1600m near Mt Freezeout. not repeated since.

I could be wrong because I'm not at work at the moment, but that number rings a bell and the only exhaust type fault I've had on d4d engines is the egr cooler blocking up. The actual Toyota fix for this is to remove the egr cooler and soak in BBQ cleaner. To stop it happening drive the car a bit harder every so often, rev out a bit more and don't let sit idling for ages. Like I said I think that is the number, it does ring a bell but I can't be certain.

This site mentions the EGR valve sticking in cold temperatures.

It's definitely a low voltage input on the EGR position sensor. I've had it happen to mine once - interestingly enough in the last couple of weeks while driving to work at altitude (it would have been over 1600m) in quite cold temps although nothing that the Prado hasn't done a couple of hundred times before given that I work in a ski resort.

I had no limp mode issues but checked and cleared the code with a Scanguage and haven't had the issue reoccur (yet).

In a previous car I owned (WRX), you could clear codes (committing them to memory to recall later) by starting & stopping the engine 10 times - I had to do it once to remove limp mode due to a faulty pedal sensor - which was fixed by spraying some contact cleaner into it....

Can anyone confirm this is the case for Prados also?
