  • Engine failure

I've just had an engine fail in my 2011 Prado 150 at Birdsville.
It seems that Num 3 cylinder has lost compression rings or holed piston car has done 68000km and just out of warranty.
Car is getting loaded up for shipping back to Brisbane in the next day or so. Just got to get camper and whole family back home now.
I'm hopping to get some kind of help from Toyota as this car is one owner and never missed a service.

Has any else had this happen to them?
Which dealer should I get it dropped off to in Brisbane?

That sucks Red. Could it have happened in a more remote location??? As for servicing in BNE, mine has only done 900k so yet to experience any Toyota dealerships service department but I have heard good things about the dealer at Kedron, which is quite big. Hope you get the rest of your gear and family home in a timely manner, safely.

      That really sucks.

Good luck with any warranty claim. Toyota now have a policy of just saying "no".

You may get lucky. Please keep us informed on how you go.

Sorry to hear about your problem couldn't happen in a worse place.

Have recently been through a major warranty saga which went pretty well. My advice is write a really good letter, add a bit of emotion about how it has effected your family and possibly even some photos. Send it to the top of Toyota and your dealer. No reason you won't get warranty provided there are no engine mods such as chip.

        Good luck.

Oh no, you made the mistake of taking your Prado away from the city. Now you've picked up a load of dirty fuel and killed the engine. Don't you know that it only happens to D4Ds that go bush? (Enough of sarcastic Toyota spin). I know exactly how you feel.

            Sorry to hear that Red.

I'm in an almost identical situation, the engine in my 2012 D4D failed 4 weeks ago on the Eyre Peninsula in S.A. Fortunately mine is still under warranty (just over 2 years old, just under 60,000 kms).

Initially it was assessed as two 'out-of-spec' injectors. Dirty fuel was investigated but no problem there. It then became apparent that cylinder No. 3 had no compression (sounding familiar?). Final diagnosis: a hole in the piston.

The Prado and camper trailer are still in S.A. while we are home in Sydney awaiting advice as to when to return to pick up the rig.

Not so un-common a fault as others on here would have us believe. And so much for the problems being fixed with the 150. Mine was No1 and 3 injectors at 73K.

                  Hi Troy,

Happy to provide a travelogue of 'what to do in Whyalla' to anyone who is interested - there really are worse places to be stuck. The blue swimmer crabs are on at the moment and there's a big snapper tournament!

But our trip around S.A. is over for now.

Troy I've sent something to your 'Inbox'.

I got stuck in Meekatharra for 4 days when mine blew. The only crabs there are attached to the locals.

I was thinking the same thing bushbasher, not good when 150's doing this. My 120 now has 230 odd ks on it now on original injectors only now 2 are just within spec. Looking at these failed low k engine I've been VERY lucky I think.
                      Cheers

Are these failures because of the failures of the injector seals leaking and causing the oil to gunk up and blocking the oil pick up?

That (seal issue) is one of two common problems with the injectors. The other fault with the D4D injectors is that they sometimes go out of spec and cause over-fuelling issues which ultimately put holes into the top of your pistons.

I seem to remember a post here by the roo saying that the original design of injector seats were used for the first couple of years of the D4D in the 150s. But the holed piston sounds more like an injector dribbling rather than atomising.
