  • Turbo Assembly oil leak $4600 to fix!!

G'day, I'm new to this forum. I've got a 2009 Kakadu 150 model and just had a 70,000km service done at the Toyota Service centre in Canberra. The Prado has only 52,000km on it but I was told they found an oil leak on the 'Turbo Assembly' and that it will cost $3800 plus labour, total $4600 because they have to replace the entire unit. Shock!

Can anyone tell me if this sounds normal? I think I should probably get a second opinion.

I'm a bit devastated at the moment.

Isn't there some kind of warranty to cover you?

I would have thought that some sought of statutory warranty might apply as the part could be expected to last longer than 52,000km. Check out the ACT Fair Trading Act or make a call to the ACT dept of Fair Trading or have a look around this site http://www.ors.act.gov.au/community/fair_trading

If you don't have any luck with a warranty claim, I'd look at getting a Gturbo from the guy in WA, rather than getting another OEM unit. I suspect it will be cheaper than $3800 for the turbo (might be on an exchange basis though) and buy all accounts they deliver astounding results.

One customer's D4D Hilux went from 94KW to 188KW (at the wheels) using one of these Turbos (among other mods). Have a read of his Facebook page.

Coincidentally... I put my Dec '11 Prado in for 50K service on Monday and was advised that they detected an oil leak from the turbo. 49K on the odometer. Called back this morning saying warranty claim had been approved and booked in next week for replacement.

Fortunate that it is still under warranty. Is this a bit of a known issue with the 150's?

There were a few cases with the D4D in the 120 but these are the first I have heard of in the 150.

Just speaking to a guy with a 200 series on the weekend with the same problem, but x2 and he was quoted $20k by Toyota to repair which seems a bit much. Do they use the same turbo?

I had a talk with John the Roo and he said that this oil leakage is a common issue that is cropping up. There is an o ring seal in the compression housing and if the turbo starts to drip oil there is no option but to replace the whole assembly, it isn't possible to just change the o ring. The leak comes from between the turbine and compressor housing.

There is an alternative to buying through Toyota:

                http://www.dencodiesel.com/genuine-o...do-kdj120.html

This is the same turbo found in the 120s and the 150s. According to John on this turbo, they are using Locktite 596 or similar to seal the compression housing.

Anyway, this is the turbo assembly CT12V that is required apparently.

As you guys are aware if you buy this same turbo through Toyota Parts, you are looking at $4,000.00.

Looks like another part to buy and put away into the spare parts bin for a rainy day. Is this the best buy around?
