  • Chipping a 150

Hi all, just wondering who out there has chipped their prado and what kind of chip/level of tuning? What kind of power figures did you end up with? Exhaust? I've heard of some pretty impressive improvements, like 70% increase in power and torque, but I don't know how much of that is true.

I was tempted to get mine tuned at one of the local tuners and was given a fair few options ranging from simple pre-programmed chips to full custom dyno tune with new fuel rail and injectors. Another guy mentioned putting a pedal box or something in as well. Supposedly the standard accelerator only uses about 90% of the throttle.. (?) That seems a bit much, but a custom tune with a quality module seems an attractive option.

Also curious to know who has upgraded their transmission oil cooler and what with...

A search will answer both questions. No need for yet another thread on either topic.

Ah yes you can search as I have done and find many threads on this subject with hundreds of replies many off subject so a new thread with some relevant replies is a good idea. This is in preference to spending hours reading just to find out what we want to know.

Except that it adds yet another thread into the search results and if it develops becomes lost in the lively debate and opinions. Search pretty much any topic and you will find one or three replies that go nowhere and just add to the frustration of trying to find answers.

Ok, I will play the game and here are my thoughts (not even worth 2c):

Exhaust yes good idea, Beaudesert and others offer options including a site sponsor. Suggest changing the turbo dump pipe too and fit a pyrometer.

Chips. There are different types which change different parameters to achieve increased power / torque. Increasing fuel pressure and injection duration are two types. Can you get a 70% increase in power? Yes! Will the engine life be adversely affected. Yes!! Lots!!! Would I chip a 1KD? Never. There are PPers who swear by their various chips and there are a couple of posts about disasters which may or may not be attributable to the chip. Searching this will show perhaps a dozen threads with builds and direct comments on chips. Good luck finding different injectors. Oh and I am not against tuning, in fact my vehicles with sparking plugs have all been tuned, on a rolling road dynomometer, not some generic tune calculated on another engine. This way specific parameters are set to a specific engine and not guesstimated by a piggy back module.

Throttle position sensor changes. Wind booster or whatever it is called. Seems to be a good thing judging by those who have fitted it and it seems benign. Would I bother? No, it is a diesel 4wd and I drive it accordingly.

Transmission coolers. Great idea if you tow regularly and / or tow heavy. To see what people have done searching will show two or three threads. Some were updated very recently. I don't tow heavy so haven't bothered but I do change the transmission oil at 60,000 km.

As much as I don't want to bite..

Title search "chip + prado" (title, otherwise the results are 16 pages of threads many having over 100 pages of their own - I work full time, I don't have that many hours spare in my day to look through that amount of information) results are 5 threads, none of which are in the 150 prado categories.

As for the transmission cooler, I see quite a number of posts that mention "add an oil cooler, it will help" or something to that effect. I have seen very little information regarding brands and opinions on those brands.

I am simply asking for current relevant information from those people who care to share their experiences with another prado owner about a valid topic... in one thread... that will then come up in the "chip + prado" title search for any other person who chooses to use the search button, thereby saving a lot of time and effort. Is that not the point of having a forum? Everyone has new experiences every day with any number of new products that come onto the market. If there was a thread with the information I was asking for in one place, then of course there would be no reason to start another.

These kind of posts just aren't necessary. If someone wants to add their bit, they can. If not, then this thread fades to nothing and life goes on. There is no need to assume straight away that every person who starts a thread has not spent at least a few minutes doing a search.

To those who are intending to contribute something useful to the discussion or simply want to see what others have to say about the topic, my apologies for wasting the time it took you to read this post.

And thankyou, that is pretty much the kind of info I was looking for. Keep the opinions coming people.

The 120 and 150 are so similar that threads about both are worthwhile reads so don't get caught up thinking you need specific info on the 150, here are some relevant posts:

PS: try searching using google. Pradopoint+Chip for example will give you more appropriate results and not every thread where someone who has the word chip in their signature has posted.

Yes that's correct. It was removed by request by the OP.

But you assume those people who have already answered the questions you have asked in other threads have plenty of time to re post the information for you.........................

Bugger me. This is all pretty easy to answer.

                    1. If you need torque and flexibility, get exhaust first. I personally will recommend Beaudesert for price, fitment and after sales service.

                    2. If you need more control, first try a Windbooster pedal module.

                    3. If you then feel you want more grunt, fit a Steinbauer unit.

AJ, not asking people to do my research, more that I'm asking people who actually have done the chip to their own car and have had first hand experience to share that experience.

Matt - I have the Manta exhaust fitted to mine. Been very impressed so far. Nice and quiet compared to some others on the market (got really sick of a loud 3" on the hilux). Turned out the 2013 model has at least one slight modification to the previous models... the rear bumper apparently has an extra rib in there now. So when I originally fitted it up it the rear section was wedged between the fuel tank and a rib, along with another couple of other little issues. I spoke to the guys at manta and they immediately went and hired a new prado to check it all out, got back to me that day, apologized and arranged a time to grab my car for the day to fix it. Very good customer service, I wish a lot of other businesses were like them.

I have the steinbauer on my hilux, but to be honest wasn't impressed with the results, tho no fault of steinbauer I believe. I think there was just only so much you can do with the 1KZ and the engine has done quite a lot of k's. They are still pre-tuned for the newer motors aren't they? Never heard of the windbooster pedal module, I'll have to look it up.

Thinking of the Steinbauer myself but not happy that it relies on input from the accelerator to work. It does not work whilst cruise control is on. Have been talking to importers and there is a new one under development at present which doesn't rely on connection to accelerator for it to work. It is being trialled in OZ at the moment and won't be long before release I am told.

I knew about the chip taking a signal from the accelerator, but Steinbauer's don't work in cruise? Thats annoying..

I tow a full single axle van weighing about 2500 kg with a 150 auto diesel. The van is quite new and the first couple of times I towed it I was disappointed in the lack of torque when climbing hills. I always tow in S4. After reading lots of opinions on this and other forums, I contacted Santa Claus and he delivered a DP chip and an auto transmission oil cooler. I already had a Scangauge II, Polyairs and a WDH..

After fitting these goodies I took the van away for a few days and what a difference! The extra torque available due to the chip is significant and it holds on in S4 much longer than it did previously. As an example, I was travelling South along the M1 (NSW) doing 100 km/h at the start of the Hawkesbury River bridge. I held the accelerator steady for what is quite a long steep hill and at the top it only slowed down to 90 km/h whilst still holding 4th gear! I haven't been able to properly check fuel consumption yet, but it SEEMS to be returning about 14-15 l/100km, down from 16-17

The transmission oil cooler also seems worthwhile with the temperature sitting at about 65 deg C when the T/C is locked up. A big difference.

I realise that I will probably never recoup the cost of the chip but it's SO nice to drive now.

                            Mike
I am still on the fence about getting a chip, tho I imagine its a whole new car when it gets one. Just a bit more from the engine would be awesome, just enough that it is noticeable but not adversely affect the engine too much. Definitely want a t/c tho as I do more sand driving than anything else offroad. What did the davies craig one set you back?

Supercheap have the Davies Craig 678 for $139. Sits in front of the A/C condenser. You'll need an extra metre of hose on top of what's in the kit.
