  • Fuel leak at common rail

    Hi gang, I'm a new member with a problem!
    I have a 2010 150 series diesel Prado, with 74000 k's, been serviced by the book
    yesterday (7/11) warning lights came up Engine man, 4WD, traction control etc. and the motor cut out, limped back to Toyota dealer, they looked at it and FOUND A FUEL LEAK at the common rail (not at the injectors )it was leaking down on to the oil filter.
    their solution , replace the fuel lines to the injectors, no idea were the leak was!!! but this should fix it.
    No mention about possible fire risk, just the $560 for the pipes + fitting.
    Left the car and asked Toyota to come up with a better answer and solution
    Looking for outside help too
    Cheers Bill

    Welcome to the forum. No extended warranty I assume? Did you have the valve clearances checked recently (80k service) and if so did they replace the pipes? I have read that some dealers bend them to get the cover off and others who reuse rather than replace them (as they should) but don't do a very good job at tightening them up again.

      no extended warranty, the 80,000 service is not due yet, they need to find the problem first, (the fuel lines haven't been touched for 30,000k's and should not just start leaking) hot fuel + high pressure + hot turbo = one good fire.
      If I was to follow their thinking and do the service the problem may still be there (pressure switch in the common rail ???)
      I need an answer not a band aid from them
      cheers

        Had a call from my dealer today, not their problem , must be the DP chip increasing the fuel pressure, (the chip is hooked up when I tow the van) asked them to give me this in writing , will speak to the manager, ( I thought I Had a noisy injector at 40,000k's, when they seen the chip fitted, but unhooked, injector warranty cancelled, asked for this in writing still waiting!!)

          Here it is 5 week later, Toyota had dealer take photos of leak, leaking at fitting at common bail, they will meet ½ the cost of parts $240, and ½ the labour $75 as a good will exercise.
          Still no reason why this pipe / pipes are leaking (has this been leaking since 40,000 service?? ) and after the replacement pipes will it start again?
          Still waiting for a letter stating that the injector warranty is cancelled because of the DC chip fitment.
          Asked if they change the fuel pipes at 80,000 service “only if they are leaking”
          As I stated before, leaking fuel under pressure + hot turbo = one good fire

            never had a leak on ours even after 182,000k's but i don't have a chip fitted though. I think meeting half way with the cost isn't a bad thing on there part as they are more than likely just to say no thanks your problem since you have the chip installed.

            since you are at 74,000k anyway and your valve check should be at 80,000k and they are supposed to remove the fuel lines for checking then you might as well get them to do a valve check, and change the injector sheets/seats at the same time since the have to remove the lines to do that properly anyway. Will hit you up for a little more labour but cheaper in the long run i would have thought.

              Gday seibright

              I am i tad angry on this whole situation based on my apparent warnings in the past!! (You wouldn't know this of course as they was removed).

              I certainly don't want to harp on here about "Elevated fuel pressures" as i have been down this road before with "Plenty" of warnings on warranty's/Outcomes of consequences etc so people like you will continue to be victim's without the hands-up of knowledge before you commit to your action's!!

              The fact is you are now stuck between a rock and a hard place & predictably the excuses are flying with you stuck with the outcome!.. Notice how the other guys got there money (Sold there product) with no responsibility of intention to back there product!! (Grey areas).

              I am curious as to if "PAST" threads where not removed would you have done then (Fitted the Chip) based on what you know now?

              Given that Toyota as offered to meet you half way i would sagest that you now approach the chip manufacturer and see if they will pay the "Other half" of the bill??

              I personally don't think they will!!... Obviously very predictable!

              Your other option would be for you to buy and fit the fuel injector pipes your self and share your experience with everyone else to read!

              Below "IS" the part numbers for 4 x injector pipes for 'your' model Prado and you will not need the pipe for the injector pump hence why i did not give that part number!

              1 = 23701-30060

              2 = 23702-30060

              3 = 23703-30060

              4 = 23704-39055

              All above is not including delivery and comes to $145.56 for 4 x injector pipes!

              Cheers

                Hi seibright,

                I had a fuel leak coming from the fuel inlet pipe on the #1 injector. It was fixed under warranty and the reason for the leak was sand/grit in the seal... most likely caused by the service tech not cleaning the area properly after the 40,000km valve clearance check. The problem didn't show up until around 56,000km and I was running a Chip-it module. I removed the module before taking the car in for service, just in case they blamed the chip.

                  Hi mate,
                  I am not taking up the offer from Toyota until I get a reason why the pipes leaked, I have asked for the dealer for an extension of time but was told no,(can’t trust there workmanship anyhow )
                  I have only had 1 warning on the leak and since it was reset, it’s been fine.(app 3000K’s)
                  Where did you source the pipes that you mentioned??
                  Cheers
