  • Acceleration Noise

G'day guys, I have a slight metallic scraping type noise when i accelerate. It only seems to come in from about 20-60km an hour and if I back off the accelerator quickly it makes a slight shutter noise. It doesn't to when the car is stationary. Once you get over about 80km's it seems to go away.

I took it to Toyota today and they told me was my exhaust springs & mounts were a little lose and full of mud.... They said it was all was fixed until I drove out of the service area and there was no change so I went back. Took the same guy for a drive as I did this morning and he could hear it just the same....

He then went down the injector path with dirty/water fuel etc.... as he would.

He suggested putting in some diesel injector cleaner in the fuel tank for a couple of weeks then go back if its still there.... sounds like going to the doc and taking two panadols......

Has anyone had similar or got any ideas what it might be. I have no warranty anymore as mine is a 2010 GXL diesel. So every hour they spend on it they will charge me....

    Thanks,

    Slatts

Give us some more information. How many ks? Manual or auto? Have you checked for mud up in the brakes, worn linings? Clutch?

G'day mjrandom, have done 82,000km's and its an auto. Had the brakes checked @80,000km's.... they were fine. The mechanic last service said they need replacing next service.

Ok. First thing can you identify if the noise is front, middle or back? Could be lots of things. Mud in brakes but also you could have lost a brake lining. Could be mud or debris rubbing on a propellor shaft or drive shaft. From what you describe I doubt it is injector related. Engine mounts could also be an issue with D4Ds though don't think it has been reported on 150s. Wheel bearings etc would be noisy all the time.

I have had a funny noise a little like pinging or an exhaust leak, highish pitch at low to mid range load especially when around town driving up hills. It is not when pushing it, just when cruising up hills with some load but not much. The noise started IMMEDIATELY after my 20,000km service.

Anyways, at the 30, 40 and 50,000 services I complained about it and the 1500rpm rattle (well know problem) and Mr Toyota was like must be injectors you need a fuel flush, blah blah, must only use BP ultimate as the rest of diesel in Aus is crap etc.

Today she went in for the 60,000 service at a new dealership and guess what, I mention the 1500rpm rattle and the girl checking me in was like yeah we have a bulletin with a fix for that, not a problem. She was stumped by the other noise and suggested the service manager come for a drive with me. He asked about it and was like yeah that's likely to be <insert technical description here> but basically it was something to do with the injector pump pressures and reckoned he would flash the ecu and check the levels. It was nice to speak to two people who could instantly put their finger on issues and not try to offload it as some way to sell engine flush.

As an aside, if dodgey diesel is getting through the fuel filters doesn't this mean the filters aren't doing their job and it would be a warranty issue to replace the filters with working ones and fix any damage i.e. flush or reco the injectors?

If it is a tapping sound like loud pre-ignition that goes away when the engine is at normal operating temp then I had the same thing. Started at 20000 and I changed the under bonnet filter at 40000 and it dissapeared. It has now returned at 55000 and I plan to chnage it again next week when I get the oil and filter changed. From what I have read elswhere on this forum (specifically from Baileys Diesel Group) a dirty under bonnet filter can cause this and from my own exoerience this may well be true
