Hi guys, I have owned 2 Prados over the last 14 years both being petrol. I have just ordered a new Deisel 150 and just wondering if anyone has noticed any difference in the Deisel from different fuel companies or are they all the same.

    Thanks
    Phil

I drive a diesel ute for work and have to use Caltex Vortex as that is what the fuel card says. Others on the forum report good things about BP diesel, the ultimate version I think.

Some Shell has 5% bio. (choock fat)
Maybe Bad news in the long term ???
I try to use fuels with the word "premium" before or after it.
Caltex vortex premium fuels - keep it clean.

There is a very long thread on diesel fuel here http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...st-Diesel-Fuel

From my point of view I don't really worry about a brand, I use my Prado mostly for outback travel and I get fuel where I can, being fussy about brands is often not an option.

On my last trip I filled up at places like Warburton, Wiluna, Marble Bar and Tom Price, all of which I had little or no choice as to brand, its all diesel!

        Cheers Andrew

Agree 100% with AJ120. I remember when all farmers bought diesel vehicles (inc cars) so they could run them with the 'red' diesel formulated for tractors as it was cheap as! The vehicles ran for years. It appears the world takes one step back to make a perceived step forward (inc Common rail direct injection). All this checking valve clearances and values, oil pickup screens and adding extra fuel filters...where does it stop...they'll be telling us to wrap blankets around it at night!! Just enjoy your vehicle and don't worry too much about the fuel...your only concern would not be to fill right after a tanker has gone as it stirs up the tank?? Cheers....Luddite!?

Have only been running bp through mine since I did me second lot of injectors. I would personally prefer to pay a little more to have the knowledge if this stuffed up and Toyota blamed the fuel, I could chase bp

Shell Diesel Extra gives consistant economy in my 120 series D4d. With Vortex Diesel or regular diesel I notice economy drops off over 10 000km until I use an injector cleaner.

I've been using Shell Diesel extra around town in Brisbane and have noticed a consistant 9.3km/l. When I was using Vortex or regular diesel I was getting 8.9km/l normally and 9.3km/l when I used vortex/regular diesel + 300mL of Chemtech Diesel Power. I dose the tank every 10 000km to give the system a clean.

In the bush I use whatever I can get.......no choice anyhow. In town always BP. The common rail is here to stay so doing the basic's like oil catch can, pre fuel filter, services every 5000k's we have a great way to get out to the bush anytime we want. When I had my 100 series I still did services every 5000 k's. So owning a Prado has not been any different. Most people don't have any major problems with their 150's so just enjoy and don't worry so much.

I carry a Diesel additive (either Chemtech or Fuel Doctor) when travelling along with a spare CAT filter and Toyota between tank filter. If I fill up in rural areas, I dose the tank to make sure any water in the fuel is dealt with. Before I refill I drain my CAT pre-filter into a paper towel. Can't tell if there is any water without draining into a jar however I'd rather run off a few hundred mL of fuel just in cast there is water in the pre-filter.

Never had any dramas with fuel in rural areas in 140 000km of travel.

almost always used vortex, only because i seem to get great discount dockets all the time. 182,000 on original injectors and only had carbon build up when i changed them out. All were still in spec at the time too.

We use BP Ultimate because as far as I know BP Ultimate is the only guaranteed fuel. I know if you keep receipts and can prove you've been using BP Ultimate TMC support engine warranty claims much much more readily. (First thing TMC do if you have an engine prob is check for algae. Any algae is an instant warranty deal breaker. BP cover algae and associated damage as a fuel warranty claim.

BP ultimate is very similar to Caltex Vortex, but Quality control on Caltex delivery is marginal IMHO (we run the wife's petrol car on Caltex unleaded and I always ask about the reliability of diesel at Caltex when refuelling it. In 12 months I've had four Caltrx operators acknowledge they knew of instances when regular diesel went into Vortex underground tanks. if four admit it, how more regularly does this happen?).

I also use a bit if Chemtech for extra algae protection in each fill. We intend to install a second fuel filter in soon too. Our Toyota dealership encourages this.

One other tip. Never fill up before your car is serviced. If for any reason they need to inspect the tank you lose the tank of fuel ~$200 plus, as TMC generally refuse to put decanted fuel back in (know of two cases where injector issues at service necessitated tank removal for algae removal and the owners lost near full tanks of fuel.)

So I figure BP ultimate, keep receipts and a touch of chemtech each fill is cheap insurance. (My car uses about 0.5 lt/100k less on ultimate too)
