  • Coil Spacers???

    Hey Guys,

The new Cooper STT's are on and I have some slight rubbing at full turn. Also, I still have the "Prado rake" even after a 50mm lift kit.

Question is has anybody here ever used coil spacers to lift the front end up and level out their Prado??? I think this would also eliminate the rubbing...

    Cheers,
    Patrick

Damn, sorry to hear about the rubbing! Did you end up changing the rim offset?

I used 5mm OME trim packers to slightly increase the height of my front coilovers. They are a pain to install as they have to be installed inside the coilovers. You can also install spacers above the coilover as well. Choosing which style of spacer really depends on the condition of your current coilovers - if they currently provide a decent lift but you want higher, install above, but if they are sagged under weight then install inside the coilovers to increase the tension.

A simple alternative may be to use a heat gun to adjust the position of the offending plastic. I've done a lot of adjusting of mine!

How does the height of your vehicle compare to the ones quoted in the post below?

I just ended up using the wheels that came with the prado. Not sure if they're OEM or not and unsure of the off set. I was gonna go black sunnies or the like just to go black wheels, but thought the added weight would be detrimental. The wheels I have now are alloy and I'll just plasti-dip them matte black.

Looks like I'll be t the Prado tomorrow with a hammer. ;-)

I think it's rubbing mostly due to the thick tread on the STTs.... Any other prob would not rub I think...

I'm not sure how many different alloys came with the Prados, but I know of at least two. Are they either of the ones below?

LOL, don't use a hammer!! The most common point of contact in the front is the front mudflap. Start by removing that mud flap and test again - if that fixes it then you just need to use a heat gun on it. If it's not enough, the next stage of custom work *behind the mudflap* would be 3 parts: wheel arch flare, black protection plastic and the very bottom lip of the body panel. The very final stage of custom work would be the body seam weld hidden behind all of this. There's a few photos of the work I did on mine after installing 33" tyres and wide offset rims, HERE. Seems I'll have to take some more photos though, as I didn't include any of the actual mud flap mods!

They look aftermarket to me. The offset may be marked on the inside of the rim, if not you can work it out if you were keen. You'll need to measure the rim width and the backspacing (distance between inner rim edge and the mounting surface). http://honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2440766

The offending mudflaps have been removed and the rubbing is gone. Now to mod them and put them back on!!

              No hammer. ;-)

                Hey Patrick,
Did you get around to measuring your rims? It'd be helpful for others to know your rim's offset, so they know what to expect when upgrading their rims...

I haven't yet, but I will when I take them off for a clean and plasti-dip.
