  • I fitted a Steinbauer - my initial thoughts

    G'day chaps,
Had the Steinbauer fitted by Diesel Care, Dalby last Friday. I filled-up in Brissy. When I got to Dalby my average was showing 8.4 l/100km. On the way home that dropped to 7.9 l/100km. The best way to describe the change is 'driveability'. There are a couple of corners in my suburb where I round them at 1800 RPM and always get that annoying flat spot feeling through the throttle; this has now gone!

Acceleration is markedly better (and smoother). Torque improvements I suggest have given the car that better driveability feeling. Whist these cars are never going to be a fire-breathing dragon (I’m past that stage) I’m very happy with the results.

I have considered a new exhaust from Beaudesert, but my research indicates if I’m only towing my box trailer occasionally, don’t bother - I’ll only be getting another 2% or so improvement. So, maybe some shockies might be in order.

You will bet more than 2% improvement with a bigger exhaust, turbo will spool up quicker etc etc. It's one of the best mods I have done to my vehicle. For your info I am using a 3in pipe from the dump pipe and back with a high flow muffler.

Can I ask what they cost? I have wanted one but it has never made it into the budget

I was always under the impression you had to get a bigger aftermarket exhaust before allowing this mod to happen?? FWIW I've the old 1KZ-TE with a 2.75" Beaudesert starting from the dump pipe with a straight through muffler. Getting quotes they all said if I was going to get a chip down the track then I needed one..(a bigger pipe). I'm sure a Beaudesert exhaust would really help utilise the full extent of your chip though although you would be looking at @another $900?? I was quoted @6% better performance and @3% better fuel economy! Certainly drives a lot better now!

Rob...a lot of dosh for a 1KZ-TE ..$935 +$35.00 freight. Add on another $300 if they fit it. I believe the D4D is easier to fit as the dump pipe bolts/nuts are more accessible! There is less need for one on the 'newer' diesel...guess it depends how much 'clobber' one accumulates over time!!!?? Santa came early!
            Cheers. C.

In my judgement, it really is 'chicken and egg' stuff. When they quote improvements, are they based on stock-standard engines/exhaust combos. It was Diesel Care in Dalby who said don't bother with another exhaust unless I was towing. Unfortunately, most of my driving is city/highway. I've only had the car off road a few times. Therein lies the dichotomy between work and play

ive got a beaudesert exhaust on a 1kz too, best money ive spent. fuel seems similar to be honest but power is noticably better and turbo spools up heaps quicker. Mates get in it and always say wow she's got some power, it isn't a slug at all anymore! I fitted it myself, wasn't too hard if you are a little mechanically minded. Mind you I ended up removing the turbo and pulling it out from the engine bay to take the dump pipe off on my work bench as the bolts were impossible to remove under the car due to corrosion etc.

Also its worth the money for one as fitment is a breeze, they are manufactured 100% to suit your car, nothing went wrong with mine at all. couldnt be happier!

I have had my Steinbauer tuned by Diesel Care in Toowoomba and it has been great. They have bigger exhausts on their D4D's and I will be doing the same once funds permit after talking with a few of the guys at the shop.

2 & 3/4" was the preference. Yes, I tow a few things regularly.

I just had a free flowing muffler fitted and the steinbauer chip and am very pleased with the result ,IMHO I don't think i would get $2500 worth of extra performance going with a new full exhaust system , bang for buck i reckon the chip and muffler are the go
