  • Question about oil filter wrench kit

Guys, i was looking at getting a genuine toyota oil filter wrench (Part - 0922807501) for about $42, but looking online i stumbled across a 14 piece kit for the same $$$.

Does anyone know the size of the toyota wrench (in mm).

I'm hoping this would be fit for purpose.

i just bought a cheapy from supercheap. As you rotate it it clamps down, works great and just need socket and extension arm which i already had. Cost me about $12.

Pretty sure the genuine tool is 75mm, can't remember it costing $42 though.

One of the best oil filter wrenches I have is one that looks weird but works on every thing for the 6 things in my driveway , which looks like a seatbelt strap attached to a square bit of metal .. It fits everything and is twisted by your average socket set . I'm too drunk to work out what it's called right now , but bushy and a few others will know what it's officially called . It's good and does all sort of vehicles . Glug glug .kav.

It is called a filter strap. Just be weary of what you buy. I use a snap-on one as it has 1/2in and 3/8in drive on either end. Some of the cheap ones are just 1/2in id box with a slot through witch the strap is place. I have seen these twist and snap resulting in the mechanics arm smashing in to the bonnet.

This is the type I have.

As I change the oil & filter every 5000k increment, the oil filter was extremely tight on this last change (factory service prior) and I couldn't undo the filter with one of the belt style tools. It started to crush the filter no matter what position, I ended up borrowing a factory removal tool from a mate which worked easy, then I purchased one off ebay from a Toyota dealer....around the $45 mark posted to the door....

The supercheap ones are ok if the filter is not overtightened. I used one of these on my last oil change and crushed the head of the oil filter as the wrench spun on the filter head. In the end I had to get a strap to remove it. If you're going to spend money on a tool, go the strap.

I bought the Toyota one for about $45.00. I have a strap one but on the Newhilux site, there had been discussion about sensor breakage. When I looked at the clearance, I decided to get the proper tool.

Tried numerous other types over the years on a variety of cars. It can be difficult to get a good grip and enough rotation on some strap and other types of tools down where the filter is.

Now have genuine Toyota tool. Works well in the limited space. In effect it is just a big multipoint square drive socket.

Can't remember the price but think it was worth it.

                        Cheers

It's pretty agricultural, just a strap type. A bit of square tube, some webbing and a self tapping screw and its done. Anyone with a hacksaw and a cordless drill could make one in 5 minutes.
