  • Fuel warning light not going out

fuel warning light came on today while driving (no buzzer sounded). I opened up the drain plug on the fuel filter and pumped some fuel into a glass jar. No water came out, just diesel.

Does this warning light also indicate anything else, as it is still on after I tightened the drain plug and restarted the car.

    Regards

    Just to let everyone know,

Toyota service have advised that there is a flow rate meter inside the filter housing. If there is a drop in diesel flow rate then the fuel system warning light comes on. Basically indicates that the filter is clogged and needs to be replaced.

Good to know. I have never needed to look at mine, but I have had the filter replaced a couple of times ( before every big trip )

Interesting that I changed mine at 40k and afterwoods I had much less rattle from the motor when the engine is cold under load (e.g. up hill). Evidence suggests that the rattle was due some fuel restriction in the filter after 40k but no alarm light was showing.

One thing that Toyota service told me was that after the filter was replaced they had to reset the warning light. Does anyone know if the light can be reset if you were to do the filter yourself?

Changed my first Toyota fuel filter @ 2000km. Second @ 15,000km and third @ 30,000km. I run a Racor as well and it's just got its first replacement filter cartridge aftet 15,000km worth of work..

Bugger the buzzers and blocked filter lights.. Once the blocked lights come on the filter is bypassing and the fuel pump is beginning to be damaged !!!!!!

Yes it can be reset yourself..Once the filter has been changed leave the top wiring plug off the filter assembly and start the engine.wait aprox 15 seconds then connect it with the engine running. The light inside the car will then go off.Its a pity that the filter isn't called up to be changed during any services (Just do it yourself every 30,000 klm's)
As Matt has said if the light comes on Shut it down before you do and damage.
              Cheers

I asked Toyota about this at my last service(80k) and they told me exactly that, they don't replace the filter at any interval, they just wait for the light to come on.This along with power steering auto trans and transfer case oils which are changed on condition and valve adjustments which are adjusted based on noise.
Set up your own service schedules and change them regularly

I had mine do the same about 30kms South of Hells Gate. Changed the filter but still had the light. Got to Hells Gate and couldn't get onto anyone who could tell me how to reset the light. It was an anxious 300km drive to Booroloola with Sat phone at the ready.

The reset process should really be in the owners manual. Anyhow, we know now

Having the same problem with fuel light staying on (not blinking, just on continuously). Contacted Toyota dealer who suggested bringing the car in so they can not only replace the fuel filter but also drop both tanks, clean them out and reinstall them. There is about 60l diesel still in the tanks that they will discard. The cost of this exercise will be in excess of $1,000.

Seems a bit excessive to me, or is this what is supposed to happen?

I bought and installed a new Toyota fuel filter, and reset the light. Testing the car is running fine but I am not sure if there still is a problem??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

                      Cheers

Sounds like some-one is trying to make some money out of you mate..be wary of some "Experts"..BTW how many Klm's have you done between filter changes.??Please don't tell me you don't do it regularly..I do mine every 30,000 klms (some do it more and some do it less) and I add cleaner every oil change..

Last service was at 34648km, now 41000 on the clock, i.e. 5000km ago. Invoice stated "Replaced fuel filter", part# T02330030410 FILTER ASSY, FUEL $90.31. I assumed that was the under bonnet fuel filter, but since this problem appeared I have learned this is not the case.
Will cancel my appointment with Toyota tomorrow and hopefully save some money.
Now that I have done the filter change myself I will be doing it more regularly independent of Toyota's schedule.
                          Thank you for the feedback.

Thanks for this thread. Of course for me the light came on half a day after refuelling while I was down south on hols and I was thinking the worst. I drained the filter by the roadside and the fuel was perfect. Once the filter light comes on it stays on, but by resetting it as described it stayed off indicating that unless I go hard it is drivable. Booked in to Toyota for a quoted $120 change of filter. PP to the rescue again!
                            Best Regards

I was about 120km from home and being a sunday nothing was open !! so I had to put it on a truck to get it and me home !! the other thing I noticed was probably 10 km's before the light came on that when I put my foot down I noticed a tick tick tick noise.
