About the only thing I can offer is the advice given to me about the second battery - don't install a sealed deep cycle under the bonnet.

The only other concern I would have about DYI kits, is stuffing your alternator.

      Type the following into google:

      dual battery siteradopoint.com

Under the heading in green it shows the site and also the section the thread is in.

You can try different key words just delete the words before the word site. i.e. installing dual battery siteradopoint.com

AGM and Gel have different charging requirements and physical characteristics. I have an optima D27F battery (AGM) x2 in my engine bay. One has been in there since Sep 2011 with no issues. Charging requirements using an alternator is 13.65v - 15v. I am using a voltage booster which ups my voltage to between 13.7v - 14.2v but on average 13.8v as I live in a hot climate.

Gell batteries need to be charged at lower voltage (one would need to refer to the manufactures product data sheet for this info) hence why they are generally not suited in an engine bay.

From the POV of a guy that had a Chinese AGM under bonnet installed for 4 years, I was very happy with it, best battery I ever ran. A FullRiver brand 90A, best investment I ever made but I think there are even better ones to look at now. Battery World have some 'new' AGMs specifically designed for under bonnet conditions, I suggest you investigate one of these.

Re charging AGMs, according to the data available and my experience with an AGM the charge was 'better', likely because of their lower plate voltage. This enables the battery to take on a more fully charged state. This is from my experience using this set-up in my 90 series but some additional points to consider in the 120s.

                1. The alternator in the 120s doesn't put out as much voltage (bloody Toyota made a change). Word on the block for under bonnet is to use a Voltage Boosting Diode (~$35.00 Ebay) to give you another 0.5v.
                2. Wire need to be minimum 6mm as previously stated, high current draw application may need even more.
                3. Consider a 12v to 12v charger, these loose efficiency in hot conditions so may not work as advertised under bonnet. I imagine this problem will be mitigated as new design units get released on the market.
                4. For under bonnet installs you need a well designed tray. There have been a number of cases where the guards have cracked on 120s. Although the cause has not been proven careful choice of a good tray design will reduce the chance of this happening. I like these : http://www.offroaddownunder.com.au/i...d4d&Itemid=288

Has anyone got a suggestion for my battery replacement?

My current primary is the OEM in my 08 Diesel Prado with the Dual Battery a REDBACK Thumper 100ampHr.
I am about to fit a winch and by all accounts, the OEM Battery may not be up to the task (Minimum CCA Required for the Winch is 650).

Do I fit the winch to the main or secondary Battery. The Thumper is apparently 920CCA.
If I should be connecting the winch to the Main battery... What are some recommendations / suggestions for the OEM Replacement if its not up to the task.

                  Cheers.

You need to wriggle it to get the best fit with the clamp due to the odd shape however you will smile when you hear how fast it cranks.

That is cheap. The best I could do was $350 in Darwin. Please tell where you got it from as I need two for my boat.

I've settled on a Lead Acid Marine Battery as the Aux with a BCDC1220 charger under the bonnet. The Redarc has a small heat shield around it and has good airflow.

One thing the battery folks stressed was to put the battery on a good 7 stage charger every 2 months at a minimum. Unless you are going long distances in your car regularly the battery will never fully top up. Easiest way is put a 50amp anderson on the front of the car somewhere ie: bullbar and plug the charger directly into it, saves the need to open the bonnet all the time....We fill up every 2 months in the diesel 120 and that reminds me to plug in the charger.....
