  • fitting gme radio this weekend

Hi all, I was lucky enough to score a gme radio off the mrs for a bday present! I was wondering which constant power is normally tapped into to fit these under the ashtray? I have done some searching on here and it seems under the ashtray is the way to go? I have put a single din head unit in and have a pocket above it so was thinking maybe there however the pocket is handy for my phone etc so will probably go under the ash tray. Is the easiest constant wire to access behind the stereo?

Thanks! Will be good to have a permanent one and not use the hand held anymore!

By constant power, do you mean accessory power or direct connection to the battery so it won't matter if the car was on or off?

sorry yes constant power so I can leave the radio on while car is off, I thought this would be the best way or do most people just connect them via accessory power?

Well there are 3 ways to obtain power.

Accessory power - 1st position on the key switch - some items powered on
Ignition power - 2nd position on the key switch - more items powered on
Direct to the battery - nothing powered on except the UHF

3rd method requires running a dedicated wire to the battery.

thanks amts, musn't have been clear enough on the first post, i was just wondering whether there is an easy to access constant power wire to tap into? ive done a fair bit of auto electrics before so have no dramas hooking it all up. do most people who fit uhfs run them on constant? Ive never fitted one. I assumed constant would be what people do so it can be used when the car is off. I suppose I could tap into the cig lighter power but then it would just be accessory power.

If you want to use the UHF with the key removed (what I understand to be "constant on"), then you will need to wire it directly to the battery. The UHF doesn't draw much when just sitting there idling and receiving. The main power draw happens when transmitting. There shouldn't be any issue running the battery flat.

You'll be running the antenna cable through the firewall anyway, so you may as well run the power to the battery at the same time for future convenience.

                Good luck :-)

I have run mine direct to auxiliary battery - assuming you have a 2nd battery, at least you won't have to worry about a flat cranking battery. As cbm8880 said, just run the wires through with the aerial cable.

cheers for the info guys! no auxillary battery as I normally use a battery box with solar panel so I can move it around when camping so might play it safe and run from cig lighter. Thanks all!
