  • Rear Work Light Install

    Hey All,

I have a few questions regarding the rear work lamp install:

The lamp itself is 35W so 3A. I'm planning to install a switch on the right hand side of the steering wheel near where the side mirror adjustment switch is and where my driving switch and ARB compressor switches are.

When you installed your lamp, did you bother with relays? Surely 3A or less 4mm copper can handle over 5m without voltage drop?

Did you wire it straight to the battery or sourced the power from something else? (not sure what has constant 12V around the area where I’m planning on installing the switch)

I’m guessing you did have some sort of connectors near the lamp/bracket in case you wanted to take it off?

Where did you earth the lamp? Is there somewhere on the rear door to attach the –ve cable to?

I wired direct to the second battery through my fuse block then to a switch on the dash as you have suggested with no problems. As you say, 3A isn't much and doesn't require a relay.

I didn't have a connector on the back as I wasn't planning on removing it in a hurry but having said that I was able to split the 12V feed inside the rear door.

I used one of the mounting bolts holding the rear wheel carrier on for the earth. Whilst the rear door doesn't make a good earthing point for the HF antenna it's fine for a rear worklight.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks Barry! Wonder if I can use either of the bolts holding the spare wheel (standard not the wheel carrier) on the inside of the door. Should be ok I guess?

Just check for earth continuity with a multimeter and you should be good.

I got 15A figure 8 wire and ran it direct from the battery. It came through the driver's side grommet with the +ve wire beinig split out to the switch. The +ve and -ve then ran the whole way to the rear door. I then used one of my 'holey' bolts to pass thinner wire through the door. The 'holey' bolt replaced one of the 4 bolts holding the tyre carrier to the door. I then added another waterproof switch near the light but the master switch is still inside the cabin.

I gave Peter my 'holey' bolt with the bracket so that he can do the same

I'm guessing only a single wire can fit through the 'holey' bolt? If this is the case how did you wire the earth Andrew? I'm like you - no dual wheel carrier at the back

The 12V goes through the 'Holey' bolt. You don't need the dual wheel carrier - I didn't have one when I had the bracket fitted. Just connect the earth to the 'holey' bolt - I used an M10 crimp terminal on the earth lead for this.

I understand the confusion now - when I said wheel carrier I meant the one on the back door not the dual wheel carrier.

Ha! All sorted, that's what I was thinking. One of those bolts should be good for Earthing purposes!

My 15A figure 8 cable stopped inside the rear door. The LED worklight that I bought has thin enough wires to fit 2 wires through the 'holey' bolt, so I used those as I had excess length. I then passed the thinner wire through the bolt and made a connection inside the door with the 15A cable.

How about some more pics and details on how you have set it up and how power was run to it etc.

Anyone got an example of a dual combo working / reverse light with override switch?

Should be able to wire the light to a switch and use a double throw relay driven by the reverse lights so that either the switch or reverse light will turn the light on.

                              Here's a quick sketch
