  • Fuel Leak

Wifey arrived home this arvo and told me there was a strong smell of diesel coming from the car. I look underneath and could see a fair amount of fuel residue all over the lower engine components and traced it back to a leak from the front (number 1 ???) injector fuel line where it enters the injector.

This is the front fuel line. It dribbles out while the engine is running at an alarming rate.

I then noticed the number 2 line has a lot of black oily residue around it...

    The rear two seem ok.

Toyota are picking the car up tomorrow and will check it out so hopefully it's a quick fix under warranty.

Note: I removed the Chip-It module just in case they knock back the warranty. Does anyone think that the increased pressure in the fuel rail from the Chip-It module could cause this leak or am I just unlucky?

I doubt the increased pressure would make any difference and if it did then I would expect more than those two fittings to show signs of leakage. No other places? No2 looks like it has been leaking for a while and I am surprised that given the amount of diesel leaking from No 1 you or your wife hasn't noticed it before. Anyway good pick up and I will be interested in the results. How many km on the clock?

It's only just clicked over 50,000km and given the amount of fuel coming from #1 it must have been a rapid onset of the leak - you can actually watch it flow out and can smell instantly smell it from 20 meters away! #2 didnt have any fuel pooled around like #1 so the leak is much slower. I couldnt see any aother places it was leaking mainly because there is fuel all over the LHS of the engine.

UPDATE... Toyota rang today to confirm it would be repaired under warranty, I didnt get any specifics but I'll ask when I pick up the car tomorrow. Whatever they are doing, they said they will do it to all four fuel lines.

Did they pull the lines off when they did the valve clearance check which was supposed to be done at 45k (I think)?

Good thought Riv. Be interested in whether they replaced the lines as per their own rules or cleaned and tightened them (which is still probably ok for a few goes).

A little rub with a bar of soap around those fuel lines should mask the problem.

I did quiz them at the 40K service and they confirmed that the valve clearance check was done. I have the car back now, all fixed. Toyota claimed that there was sand/grit in the seal which was the cause of the leak. Given the comment above, it seams that the mechanic didn't clean the seal properly when they re-installed the lines. They also fixed a leaking rocker cover gasket (i didn't even realise it was leaking). All covered under warranty.

Hopefully next time I don't get work experience kid working on my car

My dealer refused to do the valve clearance check claiming that Toyota "no longer required an actual clearance check" at 40k. The head mechanic said something like "you really don't want that done anyway".....now I know why, probably beyond the skill set of most of their staff. The real reason no doubt is the tieme taken to do it and the cost when all they get from me is the fixed price service cost. No doubt they will charge me appropriately at 80k when it is next due and I am out of the fixed price service contract.

                    Thanks Roo,

I'm far from knowledgable on such things but you're right, the pipes don't look centered. Toyota were very reassuring that the problem would be covered under warranty... maybe it was their way of saying "we stuffed up!".

There was definitely no check engine light so I'm guessing the leak was too small to register a problem. If the pipe had come off and sprayed diesel everywhere, then that may have trigger the check engine light!

VXWesty, at 22,000PSI if the pipe came off then you would probably get a hole in the bonnet!!

Thanks Roo, I'll keep that in mind when I get to the 80K service.....
