  • Pre D4D dual battery setup advice

Hi I have a 2003 turbo diesel grande I wish to install a dual battery setup to run my 2 40lt engels the system I was planning on running was a smart start solinoid with a optima deep cycle so the question i have is what type of alternator does the pre D4D use fixed voltage regulator,Temperture compensating or ecu varible alternator the reason I ask is I went into arb to enquire and they told me I need a bcdc1220 because the late model vechicles have varible voltage alternators after reseaching on here im bit confused which way to go because of how long a bcdc takes to charge the aux, issues with heat, and also the price thnks in advance.

Stick to a Redarc Smart Start with the ARB tray and you won't go wrong. Give the battery a monthly charge via a multistage 240V charger and you'll be fine. I would consider another battery than the Optima as they're not that big capacity wise for deep cycle.

The temp compensating altinator came out with the D4D's.
Yours is just a normal altinator.

So if mine is a normal alternator it should charge both batterys fine i have done lots of research on dual batterys on here i see few people are fitting diodes to up the charge of the alternator am i right in thinking this is only required for the D4D with the temp compensating alternator then cheers.

You shouldn't need the diode, just an isolator but your plan needs a bigger battery for two fridges.

Thanks everyone for there input so far so i should go for the largest amp hour battery i can fit in a arb battery tray, smart solinoid and mine being fixed type alternator no diode is required just to clarify.

If your deadset on running the two Engels in the car I would seriously consider 1) obviously a larger capacity battery and 2) a Redarc BCDC system with in built solar regulator (e.g. http://www.redarc.com.au/products/pr...regulator-25a/). The reason being that whilst your not in transit (car is off) you can still top up the batteries at your camp site and these are tried and proven bits of kit not to mention Australian made!

Don't worry about heat and the BCDC unit running in the engine bay!

Do you have room in the cargo area for the aux battery? Perhaps put a large (130Ah) AGM battery there instead. I heard elsewhere on PP that ARB aren't fitting the aux battery behind the headlight due to inner guard cracking issue.

I don't believe ARB made a battery tray for the 120 behind the headlight.

ARB only do a 10" tray which is only about 80 amp you can get a 12" tray from TJM or Piranha 4x4 which would fit a 100 amp battery this tray
mounts d/s front where the ARB tray p/s rear.

Battery size and solar backup and what's needed will depend very much on the individuals circumstance. I have a 100ah AGM for my second battery and have run a fridge and a freezer for up to 8 weeks at a time without issue.

Heading off soon for a 6 week trip using this setup and expect it will continue to perform.

                        Cheers Andrew

My arb tray has a 100ah battery in it. The battery is a trojan battery. It is deep cycle and meant to be one of the best batteries on the market. The battery tray is only 10 inch and sits on the passenger side firewall. I have a picture on my rig build up. Not sure if this setup would work for you, but the trojan will definitely fit. I mainly use this battery for the fridge when camping, and easily goes the days without starting the car. Haven't tested it much more than that but will have a better idea now i have my battery volt meters installed.

Scs150. Not the cheapest battery, but you get what you pay for. It weighs a tonne for a small battery too.
