  • Power to Roof Racks

I have a Rhino alloy tray which I put on the Prado when we go trecking. I am thinking of putting an LED light bar on the front of the tray. So for those of you with power supplies to your roof racks how did you get it up there? Drilling holes in the vehicle is not an option!

    Thanks in advance.

    cheers

I have seen a cable fed up the A pillar and brought out through the front of the Roof Rail. Seen it done in someone's Rig build a while back. Another method is to bring the cable out the top of the Rear brake light and run it up to the roof in the rear door channel with a silastic to secure.

Have a look at Foxclans Rig build... http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post235636 and here http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post364268

When I had the solar panel on the roofrack I ran 6mm2 twin core along the roof join and down the windscreen beside the snorkel (drivers side). The cabe is two insulated coes in a sheath so the shape is a flattened oval. The cable sat under the roof join trim and then the windscreen trim and i cable ties the last bit to the snorkel. It was well out of the way and never came loose, a little silicone would make it better. 6mm2 should be ample for a light bar.

        Hey Linday

As Craigm said, this is what I have done for my UHF aerial up to my Rhino Platform and has worked very well. I have the 150 not sure that the 120 is the same? There is an existing grommet above the accelerator where I passed the cable through, it also has the rear windscreen washer tube in it. Just above that in the engine bay, where the bonnet hinge is, is room to weave the cable up along side the wind screen, the plastic cover between the bonnet and windscreen is easily removed to give you access. Just silicon the cable under the lip of the windscreen. Also as per mjrandom, the cable fitted under the rubber gutter stripping with a small knick taken out of it to allow the rubber to fit flush around the cable.

After I had ran the cable and then patted myself on my back I then thought about all the additional cables I should have installed at the same time.....DooohP! I consoled myself by thinking that there may not have been enough room for 2 or 3 cables so I will probably repeat the process on the other side.

Its easy once you start poking around, good luck.

Hey Guys thanks for the tips, I like the idea of running the cable up the side of the windscreen under the moulding. The link to foxclans thread has also solved the problem of how I was going to attach the light bar to the tray. I wasn't aware that rhino made bracket to attach lights to their trays.

          cheers.
