  • UniFilter for Safari Snorkel when travelling in convoy?

    Hi Guys,

Travelling in a convoy of 5 vehicles next week for 6000kms through flinders, up to birdsville etc and a bit concerned with the amount of dust my snorkel will consume especially after my last trip the dust was insane.

Is is worth getting one of those Unifilters as they're only $30 or so. Did a search couldn't find any solid info really...

Or is it best just to get a few spare air filters and swap them over?

    Thanks a lot.

    Matt

    G'day mate.

yeah buy them in a 5 pack and rotate them each day. If the dust gets really heavy, rotate ya snorkel lead 90 degrees to slow down the dust being forced into the snorkel head. Clean one each night and re oil it at camp. I use one in the dirt and makes big difference to the condition of the air filter.

On mine, it makes zero power or drivability difference.

Thanks Matt. Is the alternative just to swap the normal air filters in the airbox or do they not work as well?

There are lots of opinions on unifilters and similar oiled foam filters. Google this site and the internet in general. My opinion is you can't beat a paper filter in the box where it is meant to live. Foam filters are a lot of maintenance if you are in seriously dusty conditions. I have run foam filters on enduro and trials bikes for years and these were small and easily cleaned and reoiled. You could do it in a decent sized ziploc bag. Not sure you would want to do that crossing the Simpson. The foam socks work well in the snorkel head and like Matt says keep a couple and rotate them around and clean them. Another alternative is to use a pre-filter on the snorkel though their performance falls off with speed. Or reverse the snorkel head but it will still pick up dust. Or stay back!

I have used the sock type that goes down in the snorkel and oil it with the K&N oil that washes out in water. Works exceptionally well and is an extra line of defence

There is definitely a lot of varying opinions yes. I have a dirt bike and hate trying to remove the oil from my hands when oiling them. I assume its similar for these filters? If so, i think ill take a few spare paper ones!

Yes hanging back is the other option, did that on the last trip. Sometimes would take 10-15mins for the dust to clear.

There is a lot of machinery designed to operate in very dusty conditions. Almost inevitably such machinery comes with one or more paper air filters, often a cyclone (or sometimes foam) pre-filter. But there's almost always a paper filter, motorbikes (for some reason) are the only exception. Whilst there is, of course, the argument that this allows the manufacturer to sell replacement filters, I think it is telling that the only commercial entities that recommend oiled foam or oiled cotton filters are the companies that make them. And the only test results that suggest such filters are as effective at removing particulates as paper filters are from those same companies.

Waiting until the dust clears is better for your engine, and you can see where you're going!
