  • Another Dual Battery Install

    Hi All
Finally got around to putting in a dual battery system -
    Optima D34
    Redarc SBI12 isolator
    Offroad Downunder battery tray
    Merrit Socket in the back
    Dual volt meter
ARB 60ltr fridge (picked it up at the show with fridge cover and $100 voucher)

For those who like fact and figures -
Charge current with car running and second battery voltage at 11.2v = 74amps at start of the charge then 56amps after a few minutes then 26amp after 30minutes.

ARB 60ltr current at initial startup = approx 6amps. (more than I thought it would be)

Installing the dual volt meter was quite easy, as the mini ebay voltmeters fit behind the switch slots with no filing of the console. Only had to cut and file two bits of perspecs to press fit into the switch slots and glue the voltmeters on the back.

    Matt,

    Your links are invalid apparently.

redarc instructions said to splice into cranking wire so you can start with the second battery if the first goes.

    did you do this?

i did it today, i didnt think it was needed but did it anyway, wasnt very keen on splicing starter motor wire.

    Cheers Octane

I didn't put in the override switch, but you shouldn't need to splice into the starter motor wire.

Hi Mat, Im looking at doing a very similar system myself with the same battery and isolator, how is the offroad downunder tray holding up? I noticed it was within 800grams of the weight limit for the D34
also what cables did you use for the job especially when running to the rear and did you crimp them yourself?

        cheers

Good job Matt. I assume the anderson plugs near the battery are so you can take it out when you don't need it?

Very neat. I like Anderson plugs. Everyone should have at least two.

Thanks for you comments, yes the plug is there for disconnecting the battery. It is surprising how much all the extra bits add to the total cost.
