  • New Speakers worse than Originals

I recently changed the stock prado headunit with a kenwood double DIN which improved the sound tremendously.

I am now halfway through installing a set of Fusion speakers. I have installed the right hand set and when I was testing the sound, they are less bassy and lower volume than the stock speakers on the left hand side which switching from right to left on the balance control.

It took me hours to do and as you can imagine pretty disappointing when you end up with a worse sound.

Any ideas why this is the case? Are fusion speakers that terrible? Are the original speakers actually pretty good?

Look forward to hearing from an audiophile.

OK have you wired the speakers the same phase as the originals? That could be why the stock speakers sound better. Also what impedence are the new speakers? Higher impedence takes more power to drive and could also be the reason why they sound soft and flat. Speakers at any given price point are pretty much the same. Some people swear that Alpine is the best or Pioneer etc but really there isn't much difference until you start spending too much. My opinion of the stock speakers is that they work. That is about it.

Jasen your comment has some merit if they have the same basic magnet in them but that isn't always the case. Some speakers run rare earth magnets and the weight isn't relevant. How they sound to you is the most important thing. And probably the only thing.

I had a similar experience with an old commodore. You'll find the Fusion speakers are less efficient than the original ie they take more power to drive. They will also probably be designed to work better at higher levels.

Magnet weight doesn't really tell you much about sound quality, it does generally tell you something about power handling.

In my commodore the system, Alpine HU and CDT speakers sounded awesome at high levels. Unfortunately I didn't want to listen to everything at high volumes. An option maybe to add a sub woofer.

Impedance is whatever the manufacturer chooses and not what distinguishes high end from poverty pack specials. My home speakers which have won multiple awards (locally manufactured in SA) are 2 ohm. That in itself can cause problems for amps and I have a nice Audiolab power amp that punches out significant low freq current. The speakers are quite inefficient at 89 dB / Watt and running them with a really really expensive valve amp results in low volume sound with little bass. It just means you need to match the gear. Not usually a big deal in car audio but if you are running 4 ohm and 8 ohm speakers off the same amp the 8 ohm speakers will sound flat.

I have put massive sound (quality not quantity) in cars and in general it isn't worth it. Improving the stock set up though can be very rewarding. Try fitting all the speakers and see how it sounds.
