  • occasional jerk at low gear

    Hi all,

I get the occasional jerky transiton at the lower gear. (Not sure if it is 1 to 2, or to 2 to3)
It does not happen often, but maybe average once a week, probably due to my driving.
The question is that is this okay?

Never had this in my previous ride - a European SUV. I am still getting use to the Prado (D4D)
So is this something that is normal and can't expect refinement in that area?

Ok, I am resisting every temptation to comment on the heading.

Do you also get a klunk when you stop? I.e. like the tailshaft is klunking due to some slack?

OOOps, reading again the title ......... hee hee.

I don't really felt any klunk when stopped. That "klunk" happened while the car was moving slowly and as I depressed the accelerator pedal abit, felt the "jump". Did not happen often. Eg, was as I was cruising slowly on a roundabout and before the exit, as I start to pick up, I felt that klunk.

I think a lot of us were thinking the same when we saw this thread. I know we are all Prado enthusiasts and enjoy engaging 4wd... but an occasional jerk at low gear just isn't good form.

Does your "engine" run away from you in high gear?

Ok, I was being serious. I have had the klunk feeling randomly about 3-4 times over 12 months when I also had the klunk problem they attribute to stopping that is fixed by greasing the nipples in the shaft. (see how easy it is to misinterpret!).

Anyway they both stopped when Toyota filled the grease. The driving klunk was far less frequent than the stopping klunk.

            mlc

PS, here is nothing wrong with the occasional jerk at low speeds, just have the tissues handy and don"t get caught.

I too have this and like MLC more the 'stopping' than the 'starting', the car has only done approx 5000k's. Also would say it was worse when on a hot day.
I thought this was the 'tailshaft klunk' that others have reported on this site with reports that Toyota keep re greasing each service with it reappearing soon after, with enough complaints they end up replacing. Is this correct or have I got this wrong? have a read of this.

I've only had the 1000k service with the 10000/6month one due in about 2 months which was when I was going to bring it up with Toyota service dept.

Correct on the tailshaft aspect. The greasing did stop it eventually in my 120. I raised it here because I believe at least in my case the two were related.

On my 150 the clunk appears to be a downshift from 2nd to 1st at very low speed under load (e.g. up hill). I have had this problem occur very occasionally since the car was new and believe it to be a quirk of the trani....it is not related to the tailshaft clunk at all IMO.
